Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3) by Sarah J. Maas | Review

Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak-but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life-and her future-forever. Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

It’s been weeks since I finished reading HoF and I’ve been trying to write a review for it but I just couldn’t. I struggled. And I kept wondering why? Why was it so hard for me to write a review for this?

It was heartbreaking, yes, but The Burning God was even more heartbreaking and we don’t talk about that yet I was able to write a review for that. HoF wasn’t a terrible book either, so it shouldn’t have been difficult for me to write down my thoughts.

But then I realized whyโ€ฆ it was really simple honestly.

I didn’t know what to say.

Heir of Fire was beautiful. So beautiful that deep down I knew that no matter what I said, it wouldn’t be enough to show my love for this book.

This is a journey of grief. Of pain, love, friendship, and finding your way back up to the surface after being buried deep inside a bottomless pit.

Celaena has been through a lot and it hurts knowing that this is only just the beginning of more pain and suffering. But no matter what, as long as there’s light in this world of darkness, there is hope.

โ•โ•โ•.ยท:ยท.โ˜ฝโœง โœฆ โœงโ˜พ.ยท:ยท.โ•โ•โ•

“She was the heir of ash and fire, and she would bow to no one.”

Death has once again made an appearance in Celaena’s life. After a shocking turn of events, Celaena has left Adarlan and journeyed to Wendlyn on a mission to uncover truths that have been hidden for too long. Secrets will be revealed, new forces will awaken, andโ€ฆ Celaena will have to face her past.

Fireheartโ€”why do you cry?

โ€œBecause I am lost,โ€ she whispered onto the earth. โ€œAnd I do not know the way.โ€

The amount of times I wanted to cry watching Celaena struggle with her grief and trauma. It was heartbreaking as always. She was filled with so much regret and guilt, going as far as saying that she didn’t deserve to live–my heart * sobs * But in the face of all of this, even when she wanted to give up–there was always something stopping her. Or more like a certain someone among other things๐Ÿ‘€

And of course, there were new characters who played a role in her healing.

“I claim you, Aelin. To whatever end.”

Rowan Whitethorn–I can see why a lot may have hated this book and him so much. I despised Rowan. The way he treated Celaena in the beginning was absolutely despicable and the things he saidโ€ฆ.* rage *

But that’s what makes the development between the two so amazing. They went from “i-want-to-murder-you-and-make-you-wish-you-were-never-born” to “i-want-to-murder-you-with-love-and-annoy-the-hell-out-of-you.” Isn’t that such amazing development?? Ah, but of course it’s platonic love.

Woah, wait. I just realized that this is the first (and probably only) SJM book that didn’t have the female main character with a love interest??? ohmygod I am shook. ofc that’ll change in the next book but sdfsdsdfs

Anyways, I don’t really love Rowan. I like him, but not love. Maybe that will change when I re-read Queen of Shadows though. The scene at the end was definitely so sweet.๐Ÿฅบ

โ€œYou do not have the right to wish she were not what she is. The only thing you have a right to do is decide whether you are her enemy or her friend.โ€

Dorian calling out Chaol was probably one of the best scenes when it came to their povs. I didn’t really enjoy Dorian or Chaol’s povs. I mean, I also didn’t enjoy Manon’s pov either ahaha although that’s no surprise (hence the 0.5 star being taken off). I was really only looking forward to Celaena’s chapters. thats no surprise either

Dorian’s a cinnamon roll and cinnamon rolls do not deserve to suffer * sobs *

Chaol wasโ€ฆ Chaol. Struggling with all the change that’s happening and to say he doesn’t like this change is an understatement.

Sorscha was just there. Like I admire her and the way she was there for Dorian–because of that, I like her.

Manon was boring. I skimmed some of her chapters in the beginning because honestly I could care less. Although, I did actually like her chapters more towards the end.

Aedion’s loyalty to his queen is amazing. All this time thinking she was dead to find out she’s not and that ending-

It’s always the last few pages when everything goes to hell๐Ÿ™‚

โ€œShe was Aelin Ashryver Galathyniusโ€”ยญand she would not be afraid.โ€

Where the Rhythm Takes You by Sarah Dass | ARC Review

Seventeen-year-old Reyna has spent most of her life at her familyโ€™s gorgeous seaside resort in Tobago, the Plumeria. But what once seemed like paradise is starting to feel more like purgatory. Itโ€™s been two years since Reynaโ€™s mother passed away, two years since Aiden โ€“ her childhood best friend, first kiss, first love, first everything โ€“ left the island to pursue his music dreams. Reynaโ€™s friends are all planning their futures and heading abroad. Even Daddy seems to want to move on, leaving her to try to keep the Plumeria running.

And that’s when Aiden comes roaring back into her life โ€“ as a VIP guest at the resort.

Aiden is now one-third of DJ Bacchanal โ€“ the latest, hottest music group on the scene. While Reyna has stayed exactly where he left her, Aiden has returned to Tobago with his Grammy-nominated band and two gorgeous LA socialites. And he may (or may not be) dating one of themโ€ฆ

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, Where the Rhythm Takes You is a romantic, mesmerizing novel of first love and second chances.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I’m having really bad luck lately disliking the mcs and love interests in contemporaries :/

But overall, it was a solid story with a really great messageโ€”to do what you want and not what other want/expect of you. Live your own life, not the life of others. Do what make you happy or you might regret it for the rest of your life.

“It had my heart, even when my dreams were somewhere else.”

Since she was a kid, all Reyna has known is life at the family hotel and she plans to continue working there for the rest of her life after the unfortunate death of her mother. Reyna feels as if there’s no other option for her except to run the hotel and tells herself she’s okay with itโ€ฆ until one day, the arrival of Aiden, her first loveโ€”now a famous singerโ€”changes everything Reyna once thought and believed in.

Coming into this, it’s clear that an incident occurred between Aiden and Reyna in the past, and the mystery surrounding what happened two years ago had me really curious. Those chapters that were set in the past really gave more info on their relationship and how it grew between the two until it all fell apart. I actually found those chapters much more interesting than the present ones.

Reyna annoyed me a lot throughout the novel with the way she acted, especially in the beginning of the book, but overtime I grew to understand her more and the actions she took. However, it still wasn’t enough for me to like her unfortunately.

Now the romance wasโ€ฆ not my favourite. So the glimpses in the past about Reyna and Aiden were nice in showing how their bond developed and all but I feel like it wasn’t really enough?? Like in the present chapters, the relationship between Reyna and Aiden was so lackluster and bland. They barely interacted with each other throughout the novel and when they did it was so awkward due to their past. I just really couldn’t love, better yet like, the romance between the two since it felt like nothing to me.

It felt so lacking and plain. Yeah, they were childhood best friends who fell in love with each other until an incident in which they finally see each other again two years later but I mean?? Where’s the angst and tension?? idk everything just felt dull to me. I just can’t enjoy the romance when it didn’t even feel real at all.

I’d honestly say Fish yes, you read that right and Reyna had more chemistry then Reyna and Aiden. At least they actually had noteworthy interactions and some actual spark between the two with the flirty and funny scenes. Aiden was just that one guy who was brooding in the background until all of a sudden everything magically changes and he starts acting nicer to Reynaโ€” umm yeahโ€ฆ

I do like how this was set in the Caribbean. Too often do novels take place in North America specifically the US so this was a nice change in scenery. It did take a little while getting used to some of the dialect used in the book, but it was definitely interesting.

Overall, this had a pretty nice take on second chances and doing what you feel passionate about. The romance could’ve been much better in my opinion and the story dragged on a lot, which had me pushing myself to get through it. Props for being a pretty quick read though!

Eternally thankful to Harper Collins Canada for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Made in Korea by Sarah Suk | ARC Review

We’re just going to ignore that this ARC review is totally not late or anything and that it came out almost a month ago whoops

Frankly in Love meets Shark Tank in this feel-good romantic comedy about two entrepreneurial Korean American teens who butt headsโ€”and maybe fall in loveโ€”while running competing Korean beauty businesses at their high school.

Thereโ€™s nothing Valerie Kwon loves more than making a good sale. Together with her cousin Charlie, they run V&C K-BEAUTY, their schoolโ€™s most successful student-run enterprise. With each sale, Valerie gets closer to taking her beloved and adventurous halmeoni to her dream city, Paris.

Enter the new kid in class, Wes Jung, who is determined to pursue music after graduation despite his parentsโ€™ major disapproval. When his classmates clamor to buy the K-pop branded beauty products his mom gave him to โ€œmake new friends,โ€ he sees an opportunityโ€”one that may be the key to help him pay for the music school tuition he knows his parents wonโ€™t coverโ€ฆ

What he doesnโ€™t realize, though, is that he is now V&C K-BEAUTYโ€™s biggest competitor.

Stakes are high as Valerie and Wes try to outsell each other, make the most money, and take the throne for the best business in schoolโ€”all while trying to resist the undeniable spark thatโ€™s crackling between them. From hiring spies to all-or-nothing bets, the competition is much more than either of them bargained for.

But one thing is clear: only one Korean business can come out on top.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While I didn’t love Made in Korea, I didn’t hate it either๐Ÿ‘€ Filled with an enemies-to-lovers romance altho its really more of Val considering Wes the enemy only, spies, sabotages, and heartwarming scenes, this was a pretty great debut. And it featured Korean-American main characters, which I’ve never seen in a book before, so that was fun!

โ€œThere isn’t always a price tag or a black-and-white answer for why people do what they do.โ€

For years, Val has been in charge of her very popular and successful K-pop beauty business with her cousin Charlie. She has her goal in mind and nobody will get in her way being the only K-pop beauty business at her school. All is going wellโ€ฆ until new student Wes comes in and starts up his own K-pop beauty business.

Of course Val doesn’t take this well and soon they both make a betโ€”whoever makes the most money by the end of the school year gets to take all of the loser’s money. It’s an all or nothingโ€ฆand thus, the competition begins.

Val annoyed me a lot in the beginning. The audacity of this girl. She acted like it was a personal offence that Wes started his own businessโ€”like no, he can have his own reasons to start a business too?? The way she treated him too-๐Ÿ˜ถ uhh yeah, I definitely didn’t like her, and though Val did learn/get better towards the end, it didn’t change my feelings towards her.

Now Wes is just so sweet. He’s too nice honestly, like I really don’t understand how he liked Val but okay ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ Wes deserved better, imo.

Also, his passion for music-๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ and the way he was trying to save up money for the fees required to go to music school because he knew his parents wouldn’t pay for him omg it was so sad ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Wes had a better reason for his business than Val did ngl.

Part of me probably wouldve enjoyed this book more if it weren’t for how much Val annoyed me, but also if I wasn’t bored. There were a lot of scenes that just dragged on for me, where I’d just be counting down the number of pages I had left until I finished so I could be free. Still, I wasn’t bored to the point that I hated it at least.

All in all, this was a all right debut by the author and I can see lots of potential for her future books! There were lots of K-pop references that I think K-pop fans would appreciate and love. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read with characters who will do anything to beat the other~

~Thank you Simon & Schuster Canada for gifting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!! <33

The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archives, #1) by Brandon Sanderson | Review

Bonjour! I’m here today to convince you all to read this masterpiece. Yes, it’s a thousand pages, but I promise you that it goes by so fast (at least for me). I’m not joking when I say that this book has easily beat it to my top 5 all time favourite books at least until i read the rest of the series. Sanderson is a genius, but I never imagined just how much of a genius he is??? Anyways PLEASE ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY. I’M BEGGING YOU.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, book one of The Stormlight Archive begins an incredible new saga of epic proportion.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths:

Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.

and return to men the Shards they once bore.

The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Sanderson is a monster.

How does one write a masterpiece such as this?? How does one create such complex and beautiful characters, worldbuilding, and plot??? How does one write a 1000 page novel and make it feel like a short book?? How does one continue to destroy my heart but also fill it with love???

10 years in the making and I can no doubt see how much of his sweat, blood, and tears were poured into this book. I’m in awe. And if this was published in 2010 , I can only imagine how epic the next 3 books already out will be??

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€ {โ‹†โ‰โ‹†} โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

โ€œThe purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.โ€

Thousands of years ago, the Knights Radiant, an order of magic users meant to protect the people of Roshar from dark forces, betrayed mankind by abandoning them, nobody knowing where they’ve disappeared. However, they also left powerful weapons behind called Shardblades with its companion, Shardplates, a suit of armor to complete the set. Kingdoms go to war over these magical items and to own this is to be a Shardbearer, warriors having the strength of several men.

Ever since the assassination of the King Gavilar Kholin six years ago, the kingdom of Alethkar has been at war with the Parshendi who are said to have murdered the king. Dalinar and Adolin Kholin fight in this war of vengeance, while across the land, Shallan fights her way to become the ward of a well known heretic and scholar who has what she needs. And then there’s a man who’s lost all hope, a man who fights for survival even during times of despairโ€ฆKaladin Stormblessed.

โ€œSomebody has to start. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right.โ€

Kaladin is such a tortured character in the beginning, I just wanted to go and hug him. Protect him from the world. Kaladin doesn’t deserve all that’s happened to him sobs Branded as a slave and sent off to be a bridgeman — the most dangerous role in war, having to carry (along with other men) large, mobile bridges to set across the chasms in the Shattered Plains for soldiers to cross. Meanwhile, you don’t have any protection from the enemy who lie across the chasms with their arrows๐Ÿ’€ It’s basically a death sentence for any man.

The mental health rep is done so, so well. I love it so much, like the way I was about to cry at so many scenes?? it might just be me being emotional Kaladin struggled so much with all that he’s lost and all who he’s failed, that it just felt easier to give up rather than deal with the pain of losing any more people he loved/cared for. Syl is literally perfect. She was there for Kaladin during his darkest moments and the bond between them was so beautiful.๐Ÿฅบ Kaladin fighting against depression and being the light for the other bridgemenโ€ฆ never in a million years did I think I was going to fall in love with the men in Bridge Four. Kaladin was their hope. Their hope for survival. Their hope for a future.

I’m just going to say this right nowโ€”IF SANDERSON DECIDES TO PULL SOMETHING LIKE KILLING THE WHOLE CREW EXCEPT FOR KALADIN, MY HEART WILL DIE AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU, SANDERSON.

I really don’t think I’ll be able to take that pain, but I know that Sanderson is the king of destroying his readers’ poor souls, so I’m just going to be prepared and still die

I made a mistake growing attached to these lovable idiots, more specifically Teft, Rock, Lopen, Skar, and Moash (especially this guy, i didnt think it was possible). I love these guys so much and now I live in constant fear that they’ll be killed-

Also just the bantering between them all ohmygod they were too good. So many favourite scenes bahaha

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ Teft grumbled. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve never liked them. They seem to be able to talk to each other, without making any sounds. I donโ€™t like the way they look.โ€

โ€œTeft,โ€ Kaladin said flatly, โ€œif we rejected bridgemen based on their looks, weโ€™d have kicked you out weeks ago for that face of yours.โ€

Teft just got destroyed.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€ {โ‹†โ‰โ‹†} โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

โ€œSometimes the prize is not worth the costs. The means by which we achieve victory are as important as the victory itself.โ€

Dalinar Kholin aka the Blackthorn, brother of the previous King Gavilar and now uncle of the current King Elhokar, is long past his glorious days, at least in the eyes of others. Visions have begun to consume his mind during highstorms and now Dalinar has beun questioning his own sanity. Are these visions real? Who is sending these visions to him? Are they to be trusted? Or has Dalinar just lost his mind?

Dalinar’s bluntness and genuineness makes him one of the only honourable lighteyes. In this land, power is divided by lighteyes and darkeyesโ€”the people with light eye colours are the ruling class with the most power, while the people with dark eye colours are beneath them. So of course, majority of the lighteyes are going to be jerks, but Dalinar is an exception.๐Ÿฅบ To him, honor is everything. And his love for his family is just so heartwarming.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€ {โ‹†โ‰โ‹†} โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

“At times, it seems to me that to be human is to want that which we cannot have. For some, this is power. For me, it is peace.”

Adolin Kholin, son of Dalinar, is a cinnamon roll. He’s just as amazing as his father and he’s so sweet ohmygod I love his loyalty to his family. Adolin will literally challenge anyone who even I>thinks about insulting his father or brother and is very hot-headed warrior. I love that even being one of those who believes that his father may be going insane, Adolin still stands by his side๐Ÿฅบ There wasn’t enough Adolin in this book, so I’m ready to see more of him in WoR โค

โ€œI believe that my own moralityโ€”which answers only to my heartโ€”is more sure and true than the morality of those who do right only because they fear retribution.โ€

Shallan Davar, daughter of her late father, has travelled to another land in order to become the ward of the famous Jasnah Kholin. However, Shallan’s true objective is to steal something and bring it back to her homeland in order to save her family from their enemies around them.

I’m so in love with Shallan’s stubbornness and wit. The way she’d just speak her mind and give off so many sarcastic comments was hilarious. And then afterwards she would be feeling embarrassed and it was just so adorable. Shallan’s an artist and I loved how there were pieces of her drawings throughout the book??? It was gorgeous omg. Also, after that ending, I’m so excited to see Shallan and her interactions with ~certain people~

“Better to exist in agony than to vanquish entirely.”

Szeth barely had any chapters, yet I found his povs amazing and heartbreaking. Imagine not having control of your own body and being forced to kill so many people??? The things he’s had to doโ€ฆ stormfather, it’s horrifying. AND THAT LAST CHAPTER OF HIS??? Oh god, I so wasn’t expecting that. extremely concerned

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€ {โ‹†โ‰โ‹†} โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

Just going to add this in because I must, but one of the best (& funniest) aspects of this world was that tradition said that women were required to cover their left hands. If a woman were to expose their left hand, it’d be considered โœจscandalousโœจ and honestly every time that was mentioned I was wheezing. It’s hilarious seeing men blush if they saw that hand exposed omg I couldn’t stop laughing. Szeth himself even commented on how odd it is. LOL I LOVE THAT.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€ {โ‹†โ‰โ‹†} โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

So as you can see, I came into this expecting to love this but little did I know how much this would capture my heart and soul. This is the type of book that you know you’ll love, but even then it still sneaks up on you and makes you fall hard. My only regret is that I started this series now and I know for a fact I won’t be able to stop myself from reading the next 3 books before the 5th comes out and then I’ll be having to wait until 2023 for it sobs but at the same time I don’t regret reading this right now?? I don’t know how that works smh.

For anyone who’s scared of how long this book is, believe me, I was terrified too BUT IT GOES BY SO FAST. The characters, plot, and world is just that good. This masterpiece must be read by more๐Ÿฅบ

โ€œNone of it mattered. He would just keep living. They’d taken his freedom, his family, his friends, andโ€”โ€Šmost dear of allโ€”โ€Šhis dreams.

They could do nothing more to him.โ€

The Crown of Gilded Bones (Blood & Ash, #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout | Review

She’s been the victim and the survivorโ€ฆ

Poppy never dreamed she would find the love sheโ€™s found with Prince Casteel. She wants to revel in her happiness but first they must free his brother and find hers. Itโ€™s a dangerous mission and one with far-reaching consequences neither dreamed of. Because Poppy is the Chosen, the Blessed. The true ruler of Atlantia. She carries the blood of the King of Gods within her. By right the crown and the kingdom are hers.

The enemy and the warriorโ€ฆ

Poppy has only ever wanted to control her own life, not the lives of others, but now she must choose to either forsake her birthright or seize the gilded crown and become the Queen of Flesh and Fire. But as the kingdomsโ€™ dark sins and blood-drenched secrets finally unravel, a long-forgotten power rises to pose a genuine threat. And they will stop at nothing to ensure that the crown never sits upon Poppyโ€™s head.

A lover and heartmateโ€ฆ

But the greatest threat to them and to Atlantia is what awaits in the far west, where the Queen of Blood and Ash has her own plans, ones she has waited hundreds of years to carry out. Poppy and Casteel must consider the impossibleโ€”travel to the Lands of the Gods and wake the King himself. And as shocking secrets and the harshest betrayals come to light, and enemies emerge to threaten everything Poppy and Casteel have fought for, they will discover just how far they are willing to go for their peopleโ€”and each other.

And now she will become Queenโ€ฆ

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

That ending completely wrecked me.

I went from being punched in the guts to screaming to silently sobbing to cackling like an insane lunatic.

Oh how I can’t wait to see the chaos that’s coming and more dragons

The Crown of Gilded Bones was far from perfect yet I still wholeheartedly loved it. The expansion of the world and it’s creatures was just amazing. Surprisingly, meโ€”who’s horrible at keeping up with too many new terms thrown in books, actually was able to follow through all that was going on and being said. That literally never happens. I seriously loved learning more about the world and seeing how this will connect with A Shadow in the Ember โ€ฆ ohmygod I’m so excited.

But even though I didn’t mind the info-dumps, I will say that it didโ€ฆ drag on. It was around the middle of the book where I lost some of my focus and took some breaks in between reading. So yes, some parts were pretty boring but honestly those scenes where Poppy, Cas, Kieran and the rest of the cast just had fun made up for those slow parts. Still, the pacing could’ve been a lot better.

โ€ขโ…โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โœงโ…โœฆโ…โœงโ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ…โ€ข

“Bravery is a fleeting beast, isn’t it? Always there to get you into trouble, but quick to disappear once you’re where you want to be.”

No matter how many times I say this it will never feel enough, but seriouslyโ€”Poppy, Casteel, and Kieranโ€”I love this trio so much. Their friendship with each other is so raw and beautiful. The teasing and bantering they have. The many arguments they had but held with so much loveโ€ฆ it makes me feel alive.

“Friendship was a far stronger bond than even something the gods could create.”

The bond between Cas and Kieran, especiallyโ€”ohmygod it’s amazing I swear can’t get over the loyalty and love they have for each other. And every time, they call each brother, omg my heart๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ

And here, Poppy and Kieran’s friendship grows even more. I love it * sobs * THIS PLATONIC FRIENDSHIP IS SUPERIOR TO EVER OTHER RELATIONSHIP IN THIS BOOK. Yes, even Poppy and Cas (they come in really close behind tho). Although I love them with all my heart, Poppy and Kieran’s relationship was just way too heartwarming and hilarious. I will never get over the intriguing convos they’d have with each other too ahaha omg.

My chest warmed. “You know what?”

He raised a brow as he looked down at me. “What?”

I reached over and patted his chest. “You’re more than okay.”

“Now that I know you think I’m more than okay, I can sleep well at night.” His tone was as dry as the Wastelands, but I grinned.

okay but Kieran mentioning the Joining when Cas and Poppy called him to talk about being their advisor was hilarious. omg why was that the first thing he thought of being called for??? Kieran, you’re killing me๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ and then he made everything so awkward omg I couldn’t stop wheezing bahahaha

โ€œYou will bow before your Queen.โ€ Casteel eyed the Atlantian coolly. โ€œOr you will bleed before her. It is your choice.โ€

And so then there’s my Queen and Kingโ€”Poppy Balfour Da’Neer and Casteel Hawkethorne Da’Neer. After all the lies, betrayals, and many changes their relationship has gone through, the truth is finally out and their love for each other is so beautiful.๐Ÿฅบ

โ€œI love you, Penellaphe. You. Your fierce heart, your intelligence and strength. I love your endless capacity for kindness. I love your acceptance of me. Your understanding. Iโ€™m in love with you, and I will be in love with you when I take my last breath and then beyond in the Vale.โ€

Cas telling Poppy for the first time that he loved her broke me. And then Poppy saying it to him and Cas thinking he isn’t worthy?!?! STOP, NO * sobbing *

And can I just say that the cheesiness was so sweet??? omg I literally lived for those stupid but cute lines Cas would say to her. So many scenes I was just grinning like an idiot and a certain scene, I seriously couldn’t stop laughing omg. But seriously, the amount of times I swooned because of the things Cas would say??? ohmygod I love them so much.

โ€œI do not want to be party to forcing you into yet another role you did not ask for nor desire. I will not replace the veil you loathed with a crown you hate. If you do not want to take the Crown, I will support you,โ€ he swore, and the intensity in his words captured me. The irrevocable oath he was making. โ€œAnd if you decide you want to take what is yours, claim the throne, I will set this entire kingdom on fire and watch it burn if that ensures that the crown sits on your head.โ€

I jolted. โ€œYou love your peopleโ€”โ€

โ€œBut I love you more.โ€

please, stop Cas๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคš

Okay but the banter between the whole group of themโ€”Poppy, Cas, Kieran, Emil, Delano, and Vonettaโ€”on their journey to Ilisseum was just perfection. They’re all such idiots and I’m so in love with them all. That one scene where they’re battling the skeletons omg I can’t-

Vonetta shouted, unsheathing her swords. โ€œCouldn’t you have said that you saw skeletons in the hole?โ€

Casteel cursed as another bony hand appeared, this one clutching a sword in its grip.

โ€œArmed skeletons!โ€ Vonetta yelled. โ€œCouldn’t you have said you saw armed skeletons in the hole?โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ Emil unhooked his swords. โ€œI was kind of taken aback by the sight of fully functional, fucking skeletons with weapons. My apologies.”

——

“Cutting off the head does not work,” Emil shouted, and I turned to see a headless skeleton tracking the dumbfounded Atlantian. “I repeat. It does not work!”

Vonetta whirled, thrusting one sword through the chest of a soldier, and her other blade through the headless skeleton. “You,” she said to Emil, “are a mess.”

“And you are beautiful,” he replied with a grin.

OMG I SHIP. I’m not the only one who ships Emil and Vonetta, right?? I love them so much omg๐Ÿ˜ญ

I will shrivel up and die if any of them are killed. which will probably happen bc JLA likes to play with our feelings๐Ÿคก

Now, I need to start screaming about something elseโ€ฆ

โ€ขโ…โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โœงโ…โœฆโ…โœงโ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ…โ€ข

๐Ÿ›‘MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW๐Ÿ›‘

I swear the heart attack I got when I read the first 100 pagesโ€”

was JLA trying to destroy us so early on in the book???? Because it worked๐Ÿ’€ a lot

Cas crying at the beginning of the book?!! Just no. Stop. I thought that was heartbreaking BUT THEN JLA GOES AHEAD AND HAS HIM BEGGING AT THE END TOO. AND BOTH TIMES FOR POPPY * sobbing * The first time because he was watching Poppy die and then the last time because he was again watching Poppy die

what the hell omg Jennifer you’re a monster. I love you but I hate you. That’s nothing new though. Typical relationship between reader and author.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ”ซ

But omg Cas let himself be taken by the Queen coughIsbeth, knowing he’d be tortured again and I’m sorry, but I died.

Honestly though, it was pretty obvious something like that was going to happen. I had a feeling either Poppy or Cas would be captured, mostly Cas bUT ALL THOSE OTHER PLOT TWISTS??!! I did not see any of that coming????

Poppy’s father isn’t King Malec??? Poppy is a god??? Isbeth is Queen Ileana???? Ian’s death??? omg omg omg I can’t. I just knew that the cave cat would secretly be Poppy’s father but that was me thinking it was Malec, not Ires??? omg he was RIGHT THERE.

sdfsfsfs okay but that last scene was perfect, it’s the way I was literally cackling. POPPY BEHEADING KING JALARA AND SENDING HIS HEAD TO ISBETH BAHAHAHAHHAAHAHA revenge is so sweet :))) I wish I could see the Isbeth’s face.

Oh also I adore Casteel’s parents. Or well, maybe not so much anymore because of what they kept to themselves at the end but still, they’re awesome ahhhh their acceptance of Poppy omg and Valyn’s words to Poppy were so sweet๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ

“My son is a very lucky man to have found you and made himself yours.”

His words embraced my wounded heart, and acceptance behind them choked me. It took a moment to speak. “It is I who is lucky to have been found by your son and have become his.”

Valyn reached over, cupping my cheek with his gloved hand. “And Eleona and I are even more lucky to have you as our daughter-in-law.”

OMG WAIT ALSO SEEING THAT WILLA COLYNS IS REAL AHAHAHA ONE OF THE BEST SCENES EVER. I had a feeling she was the Seer in the first book who told Poppy to go to that room Cas was in at the Red Pearl. Miss Willa, you are amazing โค

Also, Reaver I love you already. Burn them all to the ground muahahahaha

๐Ÿ›‘SPOILERS HAVE ENDED๐Ÿ›‘

โ€ขโ…โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โœงโ…โœฆโ…โœงโ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ…โ€ข

I already know that I missed a lot of other things that happened but omg this review will never end if I continue. Literally still can’t get over the ending. Which fool thought it was smart to finish this book in one day??? And now to wait until 2022 for book 4??? Thank god ASITE is coming out this year. Nyktos and his consort sdfgdsfsfs I’m so excited. I can’t wait to meet Sera ahhhh!! And see more draken ehehe and see Nyktos, the scary god, fall in lovee.

I must say though, as much as I love these books I’m wondering how JLA will write 3 more books in this series?? It honestly feels like this series only needs one more book but I’m sure she has something planned๐Ÿ‘€

2022 will be the โš”๏ธWar of Two Queensโš”๏ธ and I am ready to see a certain queen wreak havoc * cackles *

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

My heart is filled with so much love and happiness for Kostas and Galene๐Ÿฅบ

Also, I never imagined that I’d actually like the Olympians??? I shan’t ever get tired of Greek Mythology.

I am the daughter of Poseidon, God of Seas.
I will save my friends. I will clear my name.
I will tame the sea.

Here lies Mount Olympusโ€”home of the Greek Gods where they live under rule of the Olympians in peace. Not all of the gods are immortal, though. Each of them must prove their worth to be able to gain immortality, this being done by taking the Immortality Trial. Pass and you are granted immortalityโ€”fail, and you must wait another 10 years before taking the test again.

Galene, daughter of Poseidon, has prepared all her life to prove her worth and loyalty, especially after the actions of her brother, Chrysander, years before. However, unfortunate incidents occur eventually leading up to a vicious attack on Mount Olympus that has everyone believing Galene to be the perpetrator. With this, comes her exile from Olympus and the journey amongst friends to uncover the truth and prove Galene’s innocence.

“I am worthy of being a deity.”

The story followed four POVs and I really liked how distinct their personalities were. Galene is my favourite of the four like she’s the quiet type of strong and her character was done spectacularly. And while at times her loyalty towards certain beings seemed foolish, I had to admire it a lot. Even being banished from Mount Olympus, she still felt loyal to the very gods who exiled her. Just wow. I would despise them and look forward to revenge. now what does that say about me?

Also, she’s the daughter of Poseidon??? One of my favourite Olympians ahh so how could I not love her?? Apollo will forever remain my #1 favourite

“Because I love you, and someone needed to stand up for you.”

Iyana, daughter of Zeus, cares so much for her friends, I adore her loyalty and love for Galene like its’ seriously just so sweet. Her stubbornness too when she’d be facing gods she knows are way stronger her like wow I could never. The way she feels like she’s useless, especially with the added pressure of being Zeus’s daughter yet not having much of his powersโ€ฆ its so sad watching her despair over this. There were moments where she’s annoy me but overall her character development was done really well.

Braxtos, the son of Apollo, was probably my least favourite of the gang. He annoyed me at times, but he also had his admirable moments. There wasn’t really anything that stood out about him. He was just there for me, I guess.

“Everything is a game.”

Kostas, the son of Hermes, is just perfect. First, I mean he’s the God of Games, so how cool is that??? And he’s always trying to lift the mood up when everyone’s acting all depressed, it’s so sweet omg. Also, the way Kostas is literally the only reasonable god among the groupโ€”I guess that’s what happens when you can read others’ emotions๐Ÿ‘€

Okay but Kostas and Galene?? my hearttt they’re so adorable omg I adore those two; I was literally shipping them so hard throughout the story. THEY’RE SO CUTE. The wholesome interactions and Kostas flirting with Galene- * screaming * * extreme fangirling * I’m in love.

So sad that this is a standalone because I won’t be seeing anymore sweet moments between the two ๐Ÿ˜ญ There will never be enough Kostene (?) me attempting at a ship name scenes.

The other bond I loved here was the one between Iyana and Galene omg their friendship was so heartwarming ahhh and the one between Kostas and Braxtos?? * chef’s kiss * Kostas punching Braxtos will forever remain one of my favourite scenes. True friendship indeed.๐Ÿ˜Œ

I really should’ve been able to guess who the culprit was behind framing Galene for the incident at Mount Olympus but my brain really doesn’t like to work when the answer is so obvious smh.

Honestly, I still can’t believe the fatherly love I saw from some of the Olympians, especially from both Poseidon and Zeus towards their children like??? I mean, they were still jerks of course, but they were also actually so sweet๐Ÿฅบ Really suspicious if you ask me. I’m not used to this kindness hmmm. But I do really love them โค

Again, I wish this wasn’t a standalone because I want more of these characters sobs but The Immortal Games had a beautiful and heartwarming conclusion that definitely has me satisfied. The only reason this didn’t get 5 stars was because it took awhile to get really engaged with the story and there were some scenes that dragged on a little, but other than that, I loved it!

And now I feel like rereading the Percy Jackson seriesโ€ฆ

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas | Review – I fell in loveee

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect lifeโ€”working hard all day and partying all nightโ€”until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. Sheโ€™ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purposeโ€”to assassinate his bossโ€™s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, heโ€™s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent Cityโ€™s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passionโ€”one that could set them both free, if theyโ€™d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedomโ€”and the power of love.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

SJM keeps breaking my heart over and over again and I keep coming back every. single. time.

I have a very toxic relationship with her books.

But I will never stop coming back to them, because stopping is like telling me to stop breathing. Does that sound dramatic? Because I’m dead serious. The day I stop reading Sarah’s books is when you know my angelic spirit has fallen and I’ve been possessed by one of those devils. cough you know who you are cough

And every time I finish one of her books, I feel like I’m overflowing with love. There’s so much happiness, heartbreak, and then excruciating pain as I realize that I have to wait a millennium for the next book. Oh, and the slump that comes afterwards๐Ÿ’€

Curse all of you who told me to read this right now. Each and every one of you are devils.

I know some people found the beginning to be slow, but I actually didn’t have any problems with it. I found it perfect, learning about the world and the characters was beautiful. I wasn’t bored for one second and it literally makes me so happy because I was scared this wouldn’t meet my expectations. Shame on me for doubting this queen.

And don’t even get me started on the ending of this masterpiece. I did not see any of that coming (view spoiler)[except I had a feeling Bryce would have some special power and she did, which I totally don’t mind because SHE MADE THE DROP AND IS STRONGER THAN THE AUTUMN KING AHAHAHAHA (hide spoiler)] I was literally sobbing so much. What is it with the ending always destroying me??? It was so beautiful and heartbreaking, I swear.

โ•โ•โ•ยฐโˆด,โ‹…โœฒโ•โ•ใ€–โ˜ชใ€—โ•โ•โ•โœฒโ‹…,โˆดยฐโ•โ•โ•โ•

โ€œThat’s the point of it, Bryce. Of life. To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious.โ€

I’ve loved every one of SJM’s female protagonists, but ohmygod Bryce Quinlan totally beats them all. She literally leaves me in awe. The way she loves so much, and would live life to its fullestโ€”that is until the death of her friends, Danika Fendyr and The Pack of Devilssobbing From there, she’s an empty shell of her former self.

And the thing is that we barely knew Danika and the others we were even warned smh yet it was still heartbreaking when they were murdered and watching Bryce in so much pain just broke me. Leave it to Sarah to be able to destroy my soul for characters that only appeared in the first 100 pages. Danika and Bryce’s friendship was so beautiful I could cry for eternity and still never recover from what happened. Bryce, my queen.๐Ÿฅบ

Even heartbroken, she tried so hard to make it seem like she’s okay so that those around her wouldn’t worry, putting on the image of the classic party girl who doesn’t give a care in the world, meanwhile she’s slowly breaking more and more on the insideโ€”

Okay, but the way Bryce is bold enough to snap selfies right in front of the Archangel, Sandriel, and can literally make the Umbra Mortis feel like he’s three inches tall is actually just too good.

The Umbra Mortis looked pissed, his arms crossed and wings flaring slightly, but Bryce just breezed past him without so much as a glance. Causing Athalar to slowly turn, arms slackening at his sides, as if such a thing had never happened in his long, miserable life.

I seriously could go on forever with the amount of times Hunt was so pissed by Bryce, especially in the beginning ahaha omg.

โ•โ•โ•ยฐโˆด,โ‹…โœฒโ•โ•ใ€–โ˜ชใ€—โ•โ•โ•โœฒโ‹…,โˆดยฐโ•โ•โ•โ•

โ€œBryce was a ghost for a long while, Hunt. She pretended she wasn’t, but she wasโ€‹.โ€ The helicopter finally pulled into the air. โ€œYou brought her back to life.โ€

From the moment Hunt Athalar looked Bryce right in the eye and told her to “calm the fuck down,” I knew I’d love him. I mean, who wouldn’t???

I can definitely see similarities between Hunt and all of Sarah’s other male love interests but you know what? Hunt is a thousand times better than Rowan and Rhysand. I love the way he challenges Bryce and tries to care for her, while at the same time not being super overprotective cough unlike some people, although there is still the 2nd book for him to act like that hopefully not He’s the typical tall, dark and brooding guy who has a tragic backstoryโ€”just like Rowan (altho he has white hair but you get what I mean) and Rhysand, yet somehow I actually love him way more than both.

Bryce’s relationship with Hunt is most definitely superior to all of Sarah’s other series’ relationships involving the main characters. Like the banter?? The openness of it?? The heartwarming scenes??? Perfection. I could literally compile all of their convos into a whole book and never get tired of reading them. Their interactions were pure gold.

โ€œYouโ€™re my friend. Who watches trashy TV with me and puts up with my shit. Youโ€™re the person I donโ€™t need to explain myself toโ€”not when it matters. You see everything I am, and you donโ€™t run away from it.โ€

Also, justโ€ฆ the shower scene sobbing it was so beautiful and heartbreaking and that’s all I need to say.

โ•โ•โ•ยฐโˆด,โ‹…โœฒโ•โ•ใ€–โ˜ชใ€—โ•โ•โ•โœฒโ‹…,โˆดยฐโ•โ•โ•โ•

“The only thing I want to be called right now is your brother.” He added softly, “If you’ll have me.”

I literally love almost every character in this book, but of all of them, Ruhn Danaan is just everything. He’s such a cinnamon roll. So sweet and trying so hard to be there for Bryce after their falling out years before. That scene at the end had me crying so much. I love you, Ruhn.

Okay, but even though Ruhn is everything, I would marry Declan Emmet. Declan is my favourite i know, how could i possibly have chosen a favourite?? He’s who I’ve fallen in love with. Why you ask? This guy is a computer geek, master hacker, tech god (thinking abt a certain scene iykyk) and I love that. Plus he’s charming, gorgeous and super sweet?? I’ve fallen so hard for Declan, it’s not even funny๐Ÿคš

Also being with Declan would mean I could be friends with Ruhn and Flynn๐Ÿฅบ I love the trio omg

Seriously though, can I have a Declan?? I’ve found a new book boyfriend omg๐Ÿ˜ญ Oh also I want Tharion, too. Knowing that there’s going to be 200% more Tharion in CC2 makes my heart happy sdfsfs there can never be enough Tharion.

โ€œBryce, this is Tharion Ketos.โ€ She stepped closer to the concrete edge of the quay. โ€œAn old friend.โ€

Tharion grinned at Hunt again. โ€œNot as old as you.โ€

Bryce gave the male a half smile. โ€œNice to meet you.โ€

Tharionโ€™s light brown eyes glittered. โ€œThe pleasure, Bryce, is all mine.โ€

Tharion is such a a flirt and I love it. I need more Tharion Ketos <33

AND THEN AIDAS. omg do you know how much it killed me after seeing how much the fandom loved him and then me finding out that he only appears once??? what. the. hell. So not fair๐Ÿ˜ญ yet with that one appearance, I already love him. Not as much as Tharion, Ruhn, and Declan of course, but still ahhh he’s such an interesting demon kitty. And I love demon kitties.

โ•โ•โ•ยฐโˆด,โ‹…โœฒโ•โ•ใ€–โ˜ชใ€—โ•โ•โ•โœฒโ‹…,โˆดยฐโ•โ•โ•โ•

๐Ÿ›‘MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW๐Ÿ›‘

I actually thought something was wrong with me when I had a hundred pages left, and I still hadn’t cried at all . Like there were some emotional scenes and I got teary-eyed, but no actual sob-fest. And especially after hearing from literally everyone I know that CC destroyed them, I was so confused?? nervous laughter little did I know that those last hundred pages would indeed break me.

“We were supposed to do this together. We were supposed to live out our lives together”

Danika being there for Bryce while she made the Drop ohmygod I was sobbing. The “Light it up” sceneโ€”I swear I wanted to die. And it was also 2am in the morning when I was reading this sooo๐Ÿ’€

Also I’ll never forget how shocked everyone, but especially Sandriel, was when Bryce just casually vacuumed up the ashes of Micah. Best scene by far. Along with Hunt ripping off Sandriel’s head, of course.๐Ÿ˜Œ

Then Lele sacrificing herself in order to give Bryce enough time to be able to kill Micah- THAT ONE LINE. I SEE WHAT YOU DID SARAH๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ “My friends are with me and I am not afraidthe exact line is I will not be afraid sdfdsfs but close enough sobs Sam

Okay and finding out that Bryce was so close to jumping at one point after Danika’s death ohmygod that hurt so much and Juniper being there for Bryce before she did–I can’t deal with all of that๐Ÿ˜ญ

I keep saying certain scenes are my favourite BUT THIS SERIOUSLY IS MY FAVOURITE TOO. Declan, aka the love of my life, hacking into all the cameras & calls and livestreaming everything was amazing omg. Micah being exposed was the best part–or wait, everyone hearing Ember Quinlan act all smug towards the Autumn King, while he raged might’ve been the best. hmmm the struggles ahhh everything was perfect ohmygod I love you Declan.

OMG and the part where Bryce wrote back to Connor after having the thread saved for 2 years.๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ And Bryce seeing the pack towards the end omg omg I’m going to start crying again.

Bryceโ€™s eyes stung as she smiled softly, then read through Connorโ€™s last words to her.

“Message me when youโ€™re home safe.”

Bryce began typing. The answer it had taken her two years, nearly to the day, to write.

“Iโ€™m home.”

There was one scene where I probably shouldn’t have been laughing and instead crying, but I couldn’t help it. Hunt trying to bring Bryce back to life and what he said-

โ€œI heard what you said.” Pump, pump, pump went his powerful arms. “What you waited to admit until I was almost dead, you fucking coward.” His lightening surged into her, sending her body arcing off the ground as he tried to jump-start her heart. He snarled in her ear, “Now come say it to my face.โ€

I love these two so much ohmygod I’m not going to bother saying that I hope they’re endgame, because I know they are. There’s no way after everything that’s happened that Sarah would just ruin all of that in the next book, especially because Hunt and Bryce’s relationship is like Rowaelin and Feysand. Both accepted everything about the other and didn’t shy away from it. The only reason I could imagine that they wouldn’t be endgame is if Sarah kills off Hunt-

yea no, forget I even said that. Sarah wouldn’t dare๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ”ช๐Ÿ”ช๐Ÿ”ช

๐Ÿ›‘SPOILERS HAVE ENDED๐Ÿ›‘

โ•โ•โ•ยฐโˆด,โ‹…โœฒโ•โ•ใ€–โ˜ชใ€—โ•โ•โ•โœฒโ‹…,โˆดยฐโ•โ•โ•โ•

So as you can tell, Sarah has once again destroyed me beyond recognition and I honestly think I’m going to slowly wither away waiting for CC2. At least let there be a release date. PLEASE??? sobbing I’m not joking when I said I curse all of you. I’ll have my revenge one day ๐Ÿ™‚

Now you see, usually I’m all for recommending masterpieces, but for thisโ€ฆhell no.

If you value your sanity, then you will not read HOEAB right now. If you value your sanity, you’ll wait until there’s at least a release date for CC2. If you value your sanity, you’ll wait until CC2 itself is released.

But if you have no self-control and/or think sanity is overrated like me, then go on ahead. I wish you all the luck in the world because you’ll soon regret that decision.

“Through love, all is possible.”

Will my love for Declan Emmet have the release date for CC2 be revealed faster???

Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin | ARC Review

Eternally thankful to Harper Collins Canada for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!

From the author of Ayesha at Last comes a sparkling new rom-com for fans of โ€œYouโ€™ve Got Mail,โ€ set in two competing halal restaurants

Sales are slow at Three Sisters Biryani Poutine, the only halal restaurant in the close-knit Golden Crescent neighbourhood. Hana waitresses there part time, but what she really wants is to tell stories on the radio. If she can just outshine her fellow intern at the city radio station, she may have a chance at landing a job. In the meantime, Hana pours her thoughts and dreams into a podcast, where she forms a lively relationship with one of her listeners. But soon sheโ€™ll need all the support she can get: a new competing restaurant, a more upscale halal place, is about to open in the Golden Crescent, threatening Three Sisters.

When her mysterious aunt and her teenage cousin arrive from India for a surprise visit, they draw Hana into a long-buried family secret. A hate-motivated attack on their neighbourhood complicates the situation further, as does Hanaโ€™s growing attraction for Aydin, the young owner of the rival restaurantโ€”who might not be a complete stranger after all.

As life on the Golden Crescent unravels, Hana must learn to use her voice, draw on the strength of her community and decide what her future should be.

THIS. this is the Muslim rep i’ve been looking for๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ and the story in general was just amazing

although, i must say that it was the characters that felt kind of flat for me :/ while i could connect with the main character, especially when it came to dealing with Islamophobia, i didn’t really love her or any of the other characters, which is what made me give this 3.5 stars instead of 4. for me, if the characters are written so well and im in love with them, i dont care if there’s a bad/no plot as long as the characters are good enough to keep me engaged and enjoy myself. if the plot’s good but i dont like/care the charactersโ€ฆ that’ll definitely affect my rating = the case here.

OKAY BUT THE MUSLIM REP AND ISSUES THAT WERE DEALT WITH HERE WAS PERFECT. i went into this book hoping that there would be good representation of Islam and i was not disappointed๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ the main character, Hana, didn’t feel oppressed by her parents nor did she hate her religion. it’s just normal. and she’d actually follow the rules in Islam. also the fact that she would fight back (in a non-violent way ofc) against those who threw insults at her or spoke in a condescending tone because she wore a hijab was amazing.

“No one knows when the dark days will descend, only that they come for us all.”

i love how deep this book got in not only how often cultures/races have to deal with so much hatred, but also the stereotypes that others assume represent a whole group of people. i could 100% understand the frustration the main character was feeling when it came to ideas of what to broadcast about Muslims, the options being only the stereotypes people have hear and nothing else. it made me happy seeing Hana refuse to back down from what she believed to be right. there was also the main character actually praying and going to halaqah and salat al jumaa (friday prayer) which didnt feel like tokenization!!!

also, i definitely wasn’t expecting that plot twist๐Ÿ‘€ i have to say though, that i didn’t really like the love interest — like i dont hate him, but nor i do care about him. although i did love how the ending was realistic and not everything was all happy and solved.

so while i didn’t love this book, i did really like it and will definitely be reading more from this author!! im just so happy that the Muslim rep was done well, like i cant even express it. definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to see a great representation of Islam/Muslims!!

โ€œWhile I am scared of what the future will bring, the uncertainty has been refreshing in a strange way. I know who I am in a way I never have before, and know what I’m willing to sacrifice to stay true to myself. I guess that’s not a bad lesson to learn at any age.โ€

Counting Down with You by Tashie Bhuiyan | ARC Review

Many thanks to Inkyard Press for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!

A reserved Bangladeshi teenager has twenty-eight days to make the biggest decision of her life after agreeing to fake date her schoolโ€™s resident bad boy.
How do you make one month last a lifetime?

Karina Ahmed has a plan. Keep her head down, get through high school without a fuss, and follow her parentsโ€™ rulesโ€”even if it means sacrificing her dreams. When her parents go abroad to Bangladesh for four weeks, Karina expects some peace and quiet. Instead, one simple lie unravels everything.

Karina is my girlfriend.

Tutoring the schoolโ€™s resident bad boy was already crossing a line. Pretending to date him? Out of the question. But Ace Clyde does everything rightโ€”he brings her coffee in the mornings, impresses her friends without trying, and even promises to buy her a dozen books (a week) if she goes along with his fake-dating facade. Though Karina agrees, she canโ€™t help but start counting down the days until her parents come back.

T-minus twenty-eight days until everything returns to normalโ€”but what if Karina no longer wants it to?

a lot of things annoyed me but the way the Muslim aspect of this book was handled-

i am rage๐Ÿ™‚

this was my first Muslim rep book and the disappointment and frustration im feeling is unfathomable and i was so excited ughhhh

okay, but before i get into the negatives and start ranting, i’ll say the good stuff:

-the anxiety rep in here and how the main character dealt with it was pretty good.
-how the MC fought for what degree she wanted to pursue was amazing. parents should never be forcing their child to do what something they dont want to do.
-the sibling relationship was sweet.
-this was a pretty quick read.

thats it.

and i was actually loving this in the beginning.๐Ÿ˜ญ all my highlights literally showed my happiness at how the MC being Muslim was incorporated into this book. all the arabic words, her praying, other religious mentions-

then there was the MC dealing with anxiety and the pressure her parents put on her, and i felt bad for her. she was dealing with so much and was so scared to speak up about not wanting to be a doctor. her parents were absolutely ruthless when it came to discussing a change in career paths, they just went ahead and chose her future for her and i despised them.

but of course what happens next? the white boy comes into her life teaching her to be stronger, believe in herself (etc) and brings her happiness

โ€ฆ.

silence

it’s not even that it was a white boy bringing her happiness that got me annoyed, but how the parents were villainized when it came to religion (but i understand them looking like villains when it came to not allowing her to pursue an English major — that made sense) and that of course it was the white boy who saved her from the pain and sadness she was feeling.

literally what pisses me off so much is that she’d constantly complain of the things her parents would forbid her from doing that you know, are because it’s not allowed in Islam??? like i totally am with the main character when it came to her parents not allowing her to pursue the career she wants. parents 100% should not be doing that, it’s really messed up, especially with the pressure put on their child. they really should just be happy with what their kid wants to grow up to be, and that’s the one thing i disliked about her parents.

other than that–what the hell?? the MC constantly makes out her parents to be the bad guys for other stuff, when that’s not even true ohmygod. for one thing, you aren’t supposed to date guys/have boyfriends/kiss the opposite gender in Islam. It’s not that her parents are evil and do this as a personal attack, its haram (forbidden). Yet the main character here literally is like “i want happiness, why cant they let me have be with him” — girl, im with you about wanting to find happiness with the job, but you knowโ€ฆshouldn’t you be faithful to your religion and understand that it’s not allowed to date so your parents are right to tell you it’s forbidden?? i am confusion. and im the same age as this girl and i know this. i dont hate on my parents???

i obviously understand that this was marketed as fake-dating trope, so im not surprised with how some of the things turned out, and she can go ahead and date the guy, but it just really makes me angry me that the main character makes her parents look evil for telling her that she isn’t allowed to date? sigh

okay, but all of that i just said — maybe some wont mind it, it’s probably just something only i and some others would be annoyed with. i just feel like if you’re gonna write about a Muslim character, don’t break that rule and cast the parents in a bad light?? idk. either way, don’t make out your parents to be evil because they won’t let you date. and it’s not even something that we need to be pitied for or looked at in horror, like what the other characters in this book did when she told them. it’s part of what we’ve learned in our religion, so respect it.

i swear, i feel like this book was trying to push the idea that all Muslim parents are strict to this degree and are harsh. it’s in no way like that. maybe some are, but the same could be said with any other race/religion — it’s just that with Muslim rep books (and cough Netlfix shows), the parents are for the most part portrayed as villains.

and yes, i saw that the MC would constantly say that she knows her religion isn’t bad, she knows her parents aren’t evil, but her actions and what she’d say/do afterโ€ฆ she says she understands but she would still complain about them the next few pages, saying how they’re unfair?? she’d be so bitter about it and then she breaks said rules๐Ÿ˜

but again, one thing I did love was seeing the MC go against her parents when it came to doing the degree she wanted and not what they wanted. definitely a lot of people can relate with being forced to become a doctor, engineer, or lawyer. im thankful that my parents have never pushed me to become something i dont want to be.

i just hate what this book implies. i hate that people who will read this may think that all Muslim parents are controlling and cruel to their children. i hate that some may even pity us for some of this. just no. i can tell you that im proud to be a Muslim and proud of my religion. i don’t think any of the rules/what we’re forbidden to do is harsh at all. it makes complete sense in my eyes and i love my parents. i love everything about Islam.

now let’s get to the love interest. I DESPISE Ace with every ounce of my being. he’s legit the typical white bad boy who’s secretly a softie inside once you get to know him. i do not care about him. He’s so cheesy and im all here for the cheesiness BUT NOT THIS. so many cringey scenes and i did not see the chemistry between the two at all. sure, they had kinda similar situations when it came to their families, but like?? thats it?? i dont like either of them, but especially the main character.

i seriously think in general, if an author is going to incorporate religion into a YA contemporary, then you should actually follow through with the religion?? bc if you’re not going to do that, then literally what’s the point-

and if you’re going to end up casting the religion in a negative light, then againโ€ฆwhat’s the point?? unless you’re just trying to make others think badly on said religion?? Whether it’s Christianity, Muslim, Hinduism, Judaism, etc — follow through on those teachings. dont bother writing about a religious character in a book if you’re not even going to follow through on some of the rules and villainize the parents. thankfully at least the MC would eat halal food, occasionaly pray, and understood that getting drunk was haram. but the dating and kissing, casting her parents as evil in those aspectsโ€ฆno๐Ÿคš

and it’s sad, because the author is Muslim so i thought it’d actually follow through on that. like the author probably didn’t mean to show Islam in a bad way, but that’s how it looked like to me. i think that maybe non-Muslims or people who aren’t really familiar with Islam will probably like this book, though.

i saw in other reviews that the Bengali rep was done poorly too — im not from Bangladesh, so i cant say anything bc i wouldn’t know, but thats so sad it wasn’t done well either ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

anyways, im not going to waste any more of my time with this book. all i’ve gained from this is that i should never trust books with Muslim reps without having first read reviews by Muslims themselves. i shouldn’t have had high expectations๐Ÿคก

The Burning God (The Poppy War, #3) by R.F. Kuang | Review

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.

Despite her losses, Rin hasnโ€™t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so muchโ€”the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challengesโ€”and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenixโ€™s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuangโ€™s acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Guys, this was the happiest book ever!! Happy ending! Happy characters! Happy everything! Kuang couldn’t have written it better! Everyone’s happy, safeโ€ฆ I dont know why people are saying this is heartbreaking? If anything, it’s heartwarming!

My heart totally didn’t feel like it was being ripped out of my chest and thrown into a shredder! I totally did not go to sleep crying and wake up again crying! I totally don’t feel like I need someone to pay for my therapy bills!

No, not at all.

I’m completely fine.

yea no, I feel like I’m dying. I am dying. This pain should be illegal. What is happiness? This is so depressing. And me, the masochist, keeps going back to the last two chapters sobs what am I doing to myself?

Please end me.

Funny how I said that reading Clockwork Princess, The Hero of Ages (etc) were the most I’ve ever cried — HA I lied. No book like The Burning God’s ending has ever made me sob this much. I am dead. It’s to the point where every single time I close my eyes, I picture the ending and that is not okay. Kuang, what have you done to me???

There’s no peace, only pain. This has quite literally left a scar on my heart and soul forever. Not only did Kuang bury the knife deep into my heart, but she twisted it causing me excruciating pain.

I actually can’t think about this book without crying, so this review is basically me as an emotional wreck. Sorry but not really in advance.

(Also, there are no spoilers in this review until the end when I give out the warning!!)

โ€œThe point of revenge wasnโ€™t to heal. The point was that the exhilaration, however temporary, drowned out the hurt.โ€

This whole journey has been full of trust, love, hatred, revenge, painโ€ฆ I’ve never before seen such a story have so many complex issues. It’s astounds me.

Rin’s character has developed so much. I can’t believe this all started with poor 14 year old Rin who just wanted to get out of marriage by studying to enroll in Sinegardโ€ฆ to this. It breaks my heart when I see how much she’s gone through.

And it’s not just Rin. Kitay, Venka, Nezha, Atlan, the Cikeโ€ฆ they’ve all suffered so much throughout the whole series. Kuang is a demon with her characters. There’s literally nobody in this trilogy who hasn’t suffered. Of course, some had it coming and deserved it, but othersโ€ฆ sobs no, no, they definitely didn’t deserve that.

I swear, it brought me so much joy seeing Rin finally accept who she was and where she came from, and be proud of it. These last two books, she’d constantly be insulted because of her dark-skin and having come from Tikany, a poor village in Rooster Province. Because of this, she hated herself and thought the others to be superior, trying to cut all ties with her former village.

However, here Rin learned to embrace it all. She accepted everything that she was and most importantly, she did not bow to anyone. Rin’s now chooses to be in command.

No longer would she be the submissive fool she once was. although she still makes some pretty dumb mistakesShe leads. She gives the orders. She deals out the punishments. I literally love this girl.

And after the ending of The Dragon Republic, I was so looking forward to retribution. I am not completely satisfied, but satisfied enough. The pain she dealt to certain people was amazing. My only complaint was that it wasn’t dragged out longer for a certain person :’ (

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t go away. It never will. But when it hurts, lean into it. Itโ€™s so much harder to stay alive. That doesnโ€™t mean you donโ€™t deserve to live. It means youโ€™re brave.โ€

Please, Kitay actually deserves everything. While I had conflicted feelings throughout this series about Rin, Nezha, and others — my love for Kitay was the only constant. When I say not one moment did I hate him, I mean not one moment.

From the moment I met this cinnamon roll in The Poppy War, I fell in love and automatically knew he had to be protected at all costs.

Literally their friendship was so heartbreaking and beautiful. Watching them argue over and over again, but then come back still loving the other so much ohmygod-

This. THIS is literally a perfect example on how platonic love can be just as amazing, actually even better , than a romantic one. I love it. I love it. I love it so much.

Kitay was the anchor to Rin’s sanity. He’d always try preventing her from making rash and stupid decisions. He’s her moral conscience.

Can I just please go back to the first book? I thought TPW was horrifying and depressing, AHAHA what a joke, TPW is heaven compared to the rest of the series.

I want my children to stay happy together at Sinegard sobs this torture. Erase everything that’s happened after that moment. I want a Kitay. My baby-

Also it was amazing learning so much more about the Trifecta. Their history, the missions they made, each and every one of them and how they actedโ€ฆ all I have to say is damn.

“Dying was easy. Living was so much harderโ€”that was the most important lesson Atlan had ever taught her.”

So you’re telling me, all that hard work, all that pain, torture, and suffering, all those years of warโ€ฆ.

ONLY for Kitay and Rin to die like that???

They beat the Hesperians in battle, but in the end, it was because of the famine and damage Nikan took, that the Hesperians ended up winning and I am forever destroyed.

BUT IT MAKES SENSE AND THATS WHAT HURTS THE MOST.

But all those memories they had together in the span of those 5 years — some good, mostly bad, BUT STILL. they were memories of them suffering together and I am not okay.

And the fact that Kitay and Rin’s last moments together were of them fighting breaks every part of me beyond recognition. IT HURTS. Rin thinking Kitay betrayed her ohmygod PLEASE STOP THIS PAIN.

And the fact that Kitay’s last words in this world were “You’re hurting me” to Rin absolutely destroys me and I am sobbing.

The way I can imagine Kitay’s pained expression so clearly I SWEAR ITS KILLING ME. PLEASE OMG.

And can I just say — Rin literally chose death over surrendering to the Hesperians/cooperating with them. The way she knew that this fighting would never end if she lived and never surrendered. It honestly would’ve been so wrong if she’d given up to them, but she really went ahead and said “I’d rather die than bow down to these bastards.” She literally sacrificed herself in hopes for a better world, knowing she wouldn’t be the one to do it. AND I RESPECT THAT SO MUCH, BUT IT HURTS. She died on Speerly, and I died with her.

AND I CAN’T BELIEVE OUT OF ALL OF THEM, ONLY NEZHA SURVIVED. (Although I honestly shouldn’t be surprised) Venka my baby, also died and it was so heartbreaking that she died Rin thinking she was a traitor like hell no WHY?! Venka didn’t deserve that, Kitay didn’t deserve that, what the hell. While Rin got out of bowing to the Hesperians, Nezha’s going to have to so honestly, nevermind, that’s torture itself. I could never.

It actually broke me even before the deaths started. They were all so so depressed at the end, suffered so so much, and I hate this so much, but it was so realistic.

They’ve all come a long way from the children they once were.

โ€œYou never want to hurt them. But you have to. You have to put them through hell, because thatโ€™s the only way anyone else will survive.โ€

Oh no, I’m quite certain Kuang wanted to hurt us. We were put through hell and none of us survived, but stillโ€ฆ this author has my heart.

I swear, if I was rating the ending itself I’d 100% give this 5 stars, but unfortunately I’m not and I have to say that some parts in the book dragged out a lot, especially during the many marches. Don’t get me wrong, they were interesting, but my mind drifted a lot.

However, despite me giving this 4.5 stars, this is most definitely an all-time-favourite because that ending broke my heart into more pieces than I could’ve possibly imagined. It was a sob-fest. And I even knew how this was going to end so I prepared myself but that didn’t work at all. Kuang is both a genius and a monster.

I hate that I can never read more about these fleshed out and glorious characters. I hate that even if I re-read, it’ll never be the same. I hate this so much, because I do not want to part with them.

But you know what, even thinking all of that I regret nothing. If anything, I regret not reading this series sooner. I will forever be grateful for the pain beautiful story Kuang has created and I know that whatever series she’s going to make next will be just as painful beautiful.

Go ahead and ruin me, Kuang.

โ€œDo it. Take what you wantโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll hate you for it. But Iโ€™ll love you forever. I canโ€™t help but love you.

Ruin me, ruin us, and Iโ€™ll let you.โ€

Honourable mention: I’m forever grateful to the best demon out there Mashie for being there for me while I screamed, raged, laughed, and cried.
