Skyward (Skyward, #1) by Brandon Sanderson | Review

Spensa’s world has been under attack for decades.

Now pilots are the heroes of what’s left of the human race, and becoming one has always been Spensa’s dream. Since she was a little girl, she has imagined soaring skyward and proving her bravery. But her fate is intertwined with that of her father’s—a pilot himself who was killed years ago when he abruptly deserted his team, leaving Spensa the daughter of a coward, her chances of attending Flight School slim to none.

No one will let Spensa forget what her father did, yet fate works in mysterious ways. Flight school might be a long shot, but she is determined to fly. And an accidental discovery in a long-forgotten cavern might just provide her with a way to claim the stars.

Who would’ve thought that a talking spaceship would be my favourite character???

This book hit me right in the feels and I’m not even surprised because it’s Sanderson and Sanderson always does this. His books make me feel so scudding alive and I’m always coming out of his books looking at the world differently?? Like for an author to be able to do that with every scudding one of his books is beyond impressive. Of course, Skyward was no different and tackled so many different themes and concepts. I loved it so much omg.

“People need stories, child. They bring us hope, and that hope is real. If that’s the case, what does it matter whether people in them actually lived?”

First of all picture this: Fighting jets soaring through the sky trying to shoot down enemy aliens called Krell.

How does that not sound cool??

On the planet Detritus, humans are pushed to the brink of extinction by the attacks of the enemy Krell. Fighter pilots To fend off these attacks, fighter pilots are sent into the sky, eliminating as much of these aliens as they can lest they face death themselves. To be a pilot means to live a luxurious and honorable life thats if you manage to stay alive at least and many are encouraged to enter into Flight Academy… except for Spensa of course.

Many years ago Spensa’s father was considered a coward after having abandoned his mission in the middle of a Krell attack. Ever since that moment, Spensa and her family have been branded as a family of cowards and they’re shunned by everyone. It’s especially hard for Spensa as she wants to be fighter pilot and to get into pilot school she must pass the exams required. Unfortunately, everyone’s so against her going there since she’s a daughter of a coward, but Spensa won’t let this stop her and discover the truth to prove her father’s innocence. But what if the truth is not what Spensa expects…

“It has always seemed to me that a coward is a person who cares more about what people say than about what is right. Bravery isn’t about what people call you, Spensa. It’s about who you know yourself to be.”

I love how this book focuses on the idea of cowardice and bravery. Everyone is so scared to be branded as a coward of course, but especially Spensa because of the actions of her father. It even comes to being that if your ship is literally shot down and you’re about to crash and scudding die, ejecting is the act of a coward and therefore you’ll come back as a coward and forever be known as a coward?? Just wow. Sure, you’ll have a hero’s funeral if you don’t eject and won’t be called a coward but I mean… you’ll be scudding dead. So many deaths that could’ve been avoided… all because the fear that society had instilled into pilots of being a coward if you eject from your scudding ship.

“My confidence was that of a person who knew. Nobody could ever again convince me I was a coward. It didn’t matter what anyone said, anyone thought, or anyone claimed. I knew what I was.”

This quote here is literally everything. It’s human nature to care about what others say about you to the point where even you start to believe them. This moment meant so much like throughout the story Spensa cared so much about not being called a coward by others until she finally realized that the person who knows her best is Spensa herself. Screw all the others. This is a queen here.👑

“The soup tasted better than the blood of my enemies.”

Spensa just speaks in the most dramatic way I love it so much. She has the best entrances ever thinking about the meeting between Jerkface and Spensa and the banter in this book is perfect. I loved the side characters so scudding much, the friendships were so sweet😭

SPENSA AND M-BOT IS GOLDEN. Their bond is so beautiful and just he’s so sweet and funny omg. I need more M-Bot content in Starsight. Also Doomslug is so scudding cute.

“Sometimes, the answers we need don’t match the questions we’re asking. And sometimes, the coward makes fools of wiser men.”

I do think that something’s wrong with me being the most emotional person ever because literally I was tearing up over the ending of this book EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T SAD. My emotional heart smh. But seriously though, that last scene hit me so hard and the way I was just so scudding happy. I cannot express how much I love these characters like I shouldn’t even be surprised at this point that Sanderson always creates the most amazing characters??

“When this is done, Jerkface, I will hold your tarnished and melted pin up as my trophy as your smoldering ship marks your pyre, and the final resting place of your crushed and broken corpse!”

The mixed reviews I’ve seen for Starsight concern me a little but hopefully I’ll love it just as much as I loved Skyward. Sanderson, you have my trust.

The Burning Shadow (Origin, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout | Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“You,” he spoke. “It’s only ever been you. Before. Now. Later. There’s been no one else. There…just can’t be.”

Rereads are over.
Now……I must prepare myself for the real pain and torture JLA shall deliver.😓
Especially after THAT reveal.😨

The story picks up right after The Darkest Star with Luc, Evie, and Sylvia (her mother) all having ‘lunch’ together—tomato soup and grilled cheese, at the request of Luc of course.

What started off as a somewhat peaceful lunch . . . didn’t really end well ahahaa. I mean, with the history between Sylvia and Luc, and the multiple times she’s pulled out a gun on him—I’m surprised they lasted a full minute before going at each other’s throats.😂

“You know what they say about the arrogant man.”

“No, I don’t.” Luc dropped his elbow to the island and propped his chin onto his fist. “But please enlighten me.”

“An arrogant man will still feel immortal.” She lifted her gaze, meeting his. “Even on his deathbed.”

Ahhh it’s hilarious watching them try to out-snark each other xD.

Oh and then there’s Evie finding out that who she is right now is not who she always was. There’s a huge gap of memories missing—some of them, that even Luc doesn’t know the reason behind it. Thus begins the questioning of “If she’s even real? Or is it all just a lie?”

To add on to that, cases of humans being killed by a deadly flu-like virus have been popping up over the country and the media is leading others to believe that it’s because of the Luxen. Which leads to even more unrest/hatred to the race.

A lot’s happening, and in the middle of all that, Evie and Luc grow closer and closer. Arguing here and there, but then there were so many sweet moments between the two.🥺 My favourite was one of Luc’s gift to Evie: ✨Diesel the rock.✨there was also a Chia Pet, but Evie killed that in less than a week

Of course there were many times I wanted to strangle Evie, because of some . . . decisions she’d make that annoyed me, but hey, at least Luc was there to knock some sense into her haha. (And it goes the other way ofc)

^ (Totally not book-related but I love Usui sm🥺🥰)

I’ll never get tired of Luc’s funny but completely random shirts. Like who has a shirt that says “WARNING. PANDAS ARE BEARS. STILL NOT AS BAD AS KOALA BEARS.”🤣 Looks like Luc has an aversion to koala bears. I didn’t even know that koalas were also called that🤔

And the speeches he made……aghhhh curse my weak heart🥺

“You lost me,” I whispered. “I lost you.”

“Did we lose each other?” he asked, and then I felt his fingers on my cheeks, chasing a tear that had sneaked free. “You and I are here right now, aren’t we? Somehow, you found me, and I’m not someone who believes in happenstance. I don’t think it was a fluke … I think it was something that was bound to happen and I…”

I opened my eyes, finding his. “What?”

“I was just waiting.”

Also, JLA really has a problem with killing off the characters I LOVE😭😭😭 This here is what gives me trust issues when it comes to her books.😰😂

I’m scared this is only the beginning of these deaths, too.😓 ESPECIALLY AFTER THAT BOMBSHELL THAT WAS DROPPED?!?!?!! I still can’t believe THAT happened and ahhhhh I don’t know anymore?!?!😖

Still, I never thought just 2 words could change so much . . .

The Darkest Star (Origin, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout | Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Nothing is impossible…when you’re me.”

It’s not fair. All these characters that aren’t real but are just so swoon-worthy and lovable…….asdfghgjhkl I can’t take this anymore😩

The pain—

The Darkest Star is the spin-off to the Lux series , so I’d definitely say to read that before this—although, you don’t have to, but I believe that you’d be missing out on A LOT (and there’d be some spoilers from Lux). I mean, who wouldn’t want to meet Daemon and Katy?!?! And Dee, Archer, little Luc……yes, you read that right. Little Luc was an arrogant but hilarious genius😆 altho there’s not much a difference right now compared to then

Anyways the Origin series is set 4 years after the Luxen (Luxen = Alien) invasion on Earth. The evil Luxen who wanted to take over Earth are no longer a threat and the ones that do actually want to settle and live in peace are constantly monitored, buuuut still living nicely.
After that war between the two races, the humans/govt. doesn’t want to take any chances with the Luxen. (makes sense after all that death and destruction)

Now here we have 17-year old Evie Dasher living a somewhat normal life when one night, she decides to go party at a club with her friend, Heidi, for the very first time. Of course, the day she finally decides to sneak out go, Evie gets caught up in a raid and then……she meets Luc.😏

His shirt read NO DRAMA LLAMA. That shirt was a lie. This boy was all about the drama llama.

Luc…..I love Luc so much.😻 oh look, me about to start rambling about another one of JLA’s characters His shirts especially are one of my favourite things about him.🤣 He obviously didn’t have a good first impression with trying to kick out Evie out of the club…..for reasons to be revealed later on.🧐

asdfghjkl but hearing his sweet but stupid jokes to Evie.🥺🥰😆 Just reading brought me a goofy smile to my face xD. I can’t imagine not loving Luc.💕

I held up my hand. “I think it’s time that you leave.”

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“Because you’ve swept me off my feet.”

That’s so cheesy but I can’t help but laugh because of how ridiculously sweet that is, too.🤣

And there’s also his protectiveness of Evie and wanting to spend time with her consistently—which she herself doesn’t understand considering they only met recently.

Still……she can’t help her growing attraction to him and the more time she spends with Luc…..the more Evie discovers many shocking revelations.

Omg and there’s also that one scene where Evie’s mom pulls out a shotgun from underneath a couch cushion —I don’t know about you, but if I found out that my mother had a shotgun hidden underneath a cushion……umm hahahhaa that’d be pretty freaky😰😂 who am i kidding I’d lose it

Mom took out a gun—a freaking shotgun—from underneath the couch cushion. My mouth dropped open. I knew we had guns in the house. Mom was in the military. Duh. But hidden under a couch cushion where I sat and napped and ate cheesy puffs?

All those times she was just sitting/sleeping on top of a shotgun, and eating cheesy puffs . What a scary mom.😨

On to the next book! more Luc ofc hehe ❤
