April 2021 ~ TBR

I’m honestly so happy it’s April because April means finally the end of the semester and Spring breakπŸ₯Ί Oh, how I’ve missed freedom. A very brief taste of freedom at the very least.

Also, a book I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for is finally being released ahhh and I’m finally going to read books I’ve been meaning to read for awhile hehe. And then there are lots of buddy reads me and my friends have planned omg I’m so excited!! So many books sdfsds I’m going to make April the month with the most read books😀

Yes, it’s finally happening!! At long last, I’m reading House of Earth and Blood and ohmygod I already know I’m going to regret reading it right now BECAUSE THERE’S STILL NO RELEASE DATE FOR BOOK 2😭 Oh the pain, but I’m loving so much rnπŸ₯Ί Athie and Bryce are everything.

This is so shaping up to be my favourite SJM book ever.

I’ve realized that I should probably stop procrastinating on reading my ARCs, so here I am. It’s said to be a reversed Beauty & the Beast retelling so I’m super excited to see how that plays out!!

It’s finally time. Time to re-read and to get ready for The Crown of Gilded Bones which coming out on the 20th AHHH IM SO EXCITED. omg I read FBAA back when it came out and fell in love with the story. Although recently I’ve seen so many mixed opinions and read a lot more reviews, so now I wonder how I’ll feel about this book 2nd time around🧐

Of course, another re-read of this😌 I’m definitely hoping I can get through both books before TCOGB comes out!!

I’m actually just so so scared of this book. Some people have gotten ARCS (so lucky ahh!!) and the reactions I’ve seen over the ending I-

I’m terrified😭 I can already tell the wait for book 4 is literally going to kill me. rip me

Also, I love that cover so much

Finally reaching the end of this buddy re-read and I’m so sadπŸ₯ΊπŸ₯Ί I don’t want to part with Emi, Shiro, and Yumei * cries *

I’ve literally seen so much love for Skyward and I’m so happy that I’m finally reading it. I loved Sanderson’s Mistborn series so honestly, I have no doubt I’ll fall in love with this too. I’ve also been threatened that I’d be killed if I didn’t like thisπŸ™ƒ

First of all, that cover is creepily amazing. A dear friend of mine loves this series and I’m going to be (again) buddy reading this book with other friends im committing myself to a lot of buddy reads hehe I’ve been warned that this series is going to destroy me, so that’s fun!!πŸ™‚πŸ”«

And the ToG buddy read marathon continues!! As of now, Heir of Fire is my favourite, but let’s see if Queen of Shadows ends up beating thatπŸ‘€ I can’t wait to see more of my queen Aelin! ALSO ELIDE. I NEED TO BE REUNITED WITH ELIDE LOCHANπŸ₯Ί and Lorcan

I’m counting on myself to read all of this. All I just need to do is survive this week and I’ll be free of school and relax during Spring break. Ah, I’m also definitely going to try being more active in blogging and make up for March. I hope April goes by as slow as possible🀞

A Deal with the Elf King (Married to Magic, #1) by Elise Kova | Review

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Nothing hurts more than having one of your most anticipated reads by one your favourite authors be a huge disappointment.πŸ˜₯

I guess my streak of 4/5 stars had to end eventually.
But wow, why did 338 pages feel like 1000 pages???πŸ˜“

I don’t know. It might just be me but the whole time I was reading this, I felt absolutely nothing. I was honestly bored out of mind and considered marking this as ‘DNF’ many times, but I thought “Oh, maybe it’ll get better….?”

Spoiler . . . It didn’t

Also, one thing to know about me is that very rarely do I give out a rating below 3 stars. It makes me feel like a cruel monster human being who’s being very harsh, but I just really couldn’t love this as I thought I would.😬 (And I loved Air Awakens, so giving this 2 stars made me feel terrible)

I didn’t feel attached to any of the characters. Luella was kinda alright in the beginning and had me laughing once, but in the end, I didn’t care much about her. She was pretty boring honestly.πŸ˜…

Ohhhh and don’t even get me started on Eldas. If possible, that guy was even more bland than the rest of the cast. You see, when I saw that the love interest would be an Elf King known to the outside world as ruthless and evil . . . I expected someone more dark, mysterious and wicked, but instead there was nothing at all interesting about him. I could care less about the guy.

Ahahahahaa and the romance?!?! I never thought the day would come when I’d find another book with a romance I’d be bored with. I expected some amazing chemistry between the two, but NO, THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN.😀 Where was the angst??? Swoony moments??? I wanted to fall in love.😭 All I saw was the two constantly arguing over the most boring topics known to humanity.

β€œYou will respect me!” Eldas shouts.
β€œBe someone worthy of respecting first!” I slam the door behind me.”

^Okay, this scene here . . . it totally reminded me of my 4 and 5 year old sisters argumentsπŸ˜‚ I literally just pictured those two, when I was reading this scene and I couldn’t stop laughing.πŸ˜† I swear, I couldn’t take this seriously xD

Also, you know how almost always with romance novels, when you’re nearing the end and the two characters were together and in love, but then something happens to change that and get them in a fight, however by the end they realize they’re hopelessly in love and get back together again? wow, my English teacher would be horrified with this run-on sentence haha

Well, if you weren’t confused by that super long sentence, with this bookβ€”the beginning of that argument had to be one of the most stupidest I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s so stupid that I couldn’t help but start laughing over the fight they were having.🀣

(Probably the only amusing part in this book)

In the end, if I had to choose a character that I actually liked, it’d be Harrow and that is hilarious considering how in this status update , the someone I was referring to was him.πŸ˜† But at least he was actually pretty interesting, although he obviously didn’t appear as much.

But I also do understand that this was meant as a passion project for the author and an escape from the cursed year of 2020. So to those who want a light and fluffy read that also is guaranteed a happy ending, I’d say to try this out!😸

I think this was a hyped up a lot, so I had a super high expectations and when that was not met . . . well, it was super ‘meh’.πŸ˜• I can say that I’ve never been so relieved to finish a book.πŸ˜…

I’m still looking forward to the next book, especially since it’s about a a rogue Fae(altho this time I won’t have my expectations so high).

“May tomorrow hold every possibility. And may we be bold and hungry enough to take them for our own.”

now that I look at this too, I realize how funny it sounds.πŸ˜‚ oh god, i can’t stop laughing now.πŸ˜‚

(2.25⭐) –> for the good laughs it gave me xD

These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1) by Chloe Gong | ARC Review

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Eternally grateful to Simon & Schuster Canada for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!! ❀

What.
Was.
That?!?!

Seriously.
What the hell was that cliffhanger?!?!😰
All that work and then that happens??? omgomgomgπŸ˜“

Chloe Gong really knows how to deliver an ending. I just love how she ends the book in the middle of a climax?!?! (She even added the “To be continued” at the end as if knowing that her readers would be begging for more aghhhh and I unknowingly fell into the trap)

I could honestly just feel the beginning of despair swallow up the characters and horror dawn on them as they realized that this was not overβ€”but only the beginning of everything.

Now you probably have no idea with what I’m talking about unless you’ve already read the book, and I probably sound like a rambling lunatic, but trust me or maybe don’t, once you read this for yourselves……you’ll see what I mean.😈 (I shan’t be the only one suffering muahahahaa)

Set in 1920’s Shanghai, eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai has finally returned home after 4 years of residing in America. She’s back and ready to reclaim her rightful place as the heir of the Scarlet Gang, but unfortunately, with being gone for 4 years, there will have been many changes within both the gang and city.

The French, British, Americans, and Communists have all slowly worked their way up and gained more power in Shanghai in the time that’s passed.

And to add on to that, a strange madness is spreading in the city like wildfire with the victims clawing at their throats and whispering of sightings of a monster lurking around. Oh yeah, and somehow creepy and disgusting insects are appearing shudder it truly is a nightmare come to life.

Let’s not forget the most important of allβ€”the White Flowers, sworn enemies of the Scarlet Gang. Between the two groups lies centuries of deep hatred and to this day, they remain as is with their territories and killing of one another.

But when both gangs deal with losses of their own because of the madness and monster……they may be forced to set aside their grudges and work together. gasp (ik, the horror.)😨

Hey, hey, hey, but that’s not all Juliette’s problems. There’s also having to face Roma Montagova heir of the White Flowersβ€”the man who once knew her better than anyone and…….her lover.

After a heartbreaking betrayal though, all Juliette feels for him is a deep burning hatred . However, when an incident forces Juliette and Roma to band together to figure out the cause of the sickness, hatred is no longer what lies in her mind.

Or maybe, that feeling never left at all……..😏

Juliette was such an amazing female protagonist and I just loved her.πŸ₯° Her strength and bloodthirstiness…….ahhhhh what’s not to love about it? (uh oh, I’m starting to see a trend in what type of characters I’m loving)

Even though she didn’t enjoy hurting people, she still would, knowing when it was necessary for information or if said victim would be a hindrance left alive. xD and unlike our soft boy here, Juliette would think of shooting as her first option rather than incapacitating them. (not….that that’s a good thing of course hehe)
It’s pretty cool seeing the female MC as the cold and unforgiving one and the male being the opposite (in most cases).

“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”

Yes, the famous line we all know of. Except what’s funny is that I actually never read Romeo and Juliet before. I’ve heard about it and everything, but my English teacher told us that he hated the play and it’s stupidity, so he wouldn’t make us read it (instead it was “Much Ado About Nothing”, which I loved).

But I digress.

Roma Montagova here is, thankfully, nothing like the Romeo in Shakespeare. Although he is the heir of the White Flowers and must of course get his hands dirty (I mean, he is in a gang), Roma does not have the same ruthlessness as Juliette and actually tries to avoid killing others haha.

But it makes sense the two turned out the way they are now, considering the betrayalβ€”and you’ll have to read this to find out what that betrayal was hehe.πŸ˜‰

Also, when Roma would call Juliette ‘dorogaya’ (means ‘sweetheart’)…….it was just so sweet.πŸ₯Ί

There are also some side characters that I just loved so much, like Benedikt, Marshall, and Kathleen.πŸ’• And then ones that I absolutely despised…….but I won’t go into any names. In due time, you shall see who I am talking about.

Chloe Gong said that she wrote “These Violent Delights” as a love letter to Shanghai and I can truly see that. I could almost imagine being in Shanghai myself when she’d describe the beauty of parts of the city and hear her love for it. The culture, the people, the languages spoken……just everything in the book was beautiful to learn about.πŸ’ž

Now you’re probably wondering, “If I loved this book so much, why 4 stars?”.

Well, the downside of this book was that some parts were just a slow at times, so I’d kind of have to push myself to get through it. Also, with the people in the city speaking so many different languages (Chinese, Russian, French, etc), sometimes there wouldn’t be a translation of it afterwards in English, so how was I supposed to know what it meant?!?!

I mean, based off of what came after, I could guess what the person had said, but I kinda want to know exactly what they’re saying (I just went to google translate at that point haha). Some of the sentences were translated later in English by the characters, but then sometimes not….? Maybe, just maybe, I should’ve paid more attention in French class. whoops

Other than that, this book was beautifully written and AFTER THAT ‘TO BE CONTINUED’ ENDING I NEED BOOK 2 ASAP.😀😨

I will be over here hoping that I get an ARC of the 2nd book.πŸ₯Ί
Please, please, please…….

P.S. My loyalty will forever lie with the Scarlet Gang🌹

Legendborn (Legendborn, #1) by Tracy Deonn | ARC Review

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Many thanks to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for sharing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All quotes in this review are subject to change upon release date.

Hold up.
Did it seriously just end like that ?!?!?😀

It seems that I’m on a streak of cliffhangers and it’s not fun.😒

But wow, Legendborn was an amazing Arthurian retelling. There’s no doubt that I absolutely love the tv show, Merlin , and seeing that this book was based off of the legend……well, I just HAD to read it.😏

I loved the Black representation that was shown here and I think this might be my first book with a Black MC. I know, I know, shame on me.πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
But at least I was lucky enough to have Legendborn being my first book with one and it was soooo good😍

We have our MC, 16-year old Bree Matthews, who has just recently dealt with the passing of her mother. To escape her hometown and it’s memories of her mother, Bree and her best friend, Alice, go off to an early college program for bright high schoolers at the University of North Carolina located in Chapel Hill.

The plan seems perfectβ€”that is, until Bree discovers something abnormal her first day there. More specifically, she witnesses demons attacking and a boy in her school, Selwyn Kane, use…….

✨Magic✨

From there, she learns that that particular magic is called aether and there’s a whole other race of people called Legendborns who protect humanity by eliminating the Shadowborn (basically demons) and are descendants of King Arthur & his knights.

And then of course, there’s the Knights of the Round Tableβš”οΈ

Bree was a really cool character. I loved how she always stood up to the bullies she had to deal with and the insults that were directed at her. Bree always said whatever came to mind haha something I can’t imagine doing xD. She was such a funny character, too and her her friendship was Alice was really too although she didn’t appear as much as I thought she would.πŸ€”

Still, their conversations were pretty funny.πŸ˜‚

“Nick says I’ve got to keep it secret, keep it safe.”
“Did you just Lord of the Rings me?”
“Nope.” I grin. “I just Fellowship of the Ringed you.”

Then there’s Nick, the handsome and perfect student, that is lives nearby on campus.
Hmmmm. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with him, but I just don’t really like him.πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Instead, I have my eyes on a certain dark haired and golden eyed boy.😏 Sel was such an intriguing character and I really want to know more about him in the next book. (Hehe I’ve always had a thing for those tall, dark, and broody characters xD)

Ooo and another thing I loved was how close to reality this book was. Legendborn have to worry about leading their normal lives all while making sure they do their job and keeping everything in the Order a secret from their loved ones. If they dare reveal any secrets……well, I’ll let you find out for yourselves once you read this.πŸ˜‰

Also, Bree had to deal with racist comments and people, but still kept her head held high and in defiance to those who dared trying to insult her. I love that girl ~ such an inspiration to others.πŸ’•

Legendborn was so captivating, I didn’t even realize I was on the last page until I reached a blank.😒 The only reason it lost a star was because there was the insta-love and it felt pretty slow in the beginning, but eventually I got really into it.

Ahhh I can’t wait for the next book! If this isn’t on your TBR already, then I must tell you to do it NOW. You won’t regret it. (At least, I’m mostly sure you won’t xD)

I can’t wait too see what Tracy Deonn writes next.
(Although I do feel a love triangle brewing up in the next book, but maybe I’m wrong)

“Where do we begin?”

“At the beginning.”

Bookish and the Beast (Once Upon a Con, #3) by Ashley Poston | Review

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“With him, a little of her heart leaves, but it leaves room, too.

For new people.

For new loves.

For new impossibilities.”

Awww why did reading this have to go by so fast?πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜

Ashley Poston creates the most beautiful contemporary retellings EVERπŸ₯°

Well……maybe I can’t really say that considering how I’ve only read two of her books.πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚ But it really does feel like that.

I thought Geekerella was amazing and one of the most adorable contemporaries I’ve ever read, but this………

Bookish and the Beast completely surpasses its predecessors!😍 (I can’t really judge the 2nd book though, since I haven’t read it xD) It was such a cute and fun read!πŸ₯°

Vance Reigns is the actor for General Sondβ€”the villain of Starfield β€”and now is considered a true villain in real life after a certain……incident resulting in the breakup of Hollywood’s cutest couple. His stepfather decides for Vance that he should lay low for awhile and sends him off to a tiny remote town. And of course, he absolutely hates it there.

Rosie Thorne recently lost her mother and continues dealing with that grief by finding comfort in reading her booksβ€”that is until she damages a priceless edition of a book and is tasked with trying to repay it with the help of Vance. You can guess how that goes.πŸ˜‚

They absolutely despise each other. But eventually, something changes all that.😏

Ahhh Vance’s character development was amazing.πŸ₯° He went from not trusting anyone and being a total jerk to everyone to learning to believe in himself & others more and understanding his mistakes & fixing them. So sweetπŸ’•

Of course, I automatically loved Rosie the moment I learned that she was a bookworm. Her obsession with books is so me and everyone else here (or at least I’m pretty sure).

“I love how books are not really just books at all, but doorways.
They are portals into places I’ve never been and people I’ll never be, and in them I have lived a thousand lives and seen a thousand different worlds.”

That’s so trueπŸ₯ΊπŸ’ž And she even got Vance to get into reading books!!! That is such an accomplishment.🀯 I always try getting my friends into reading & GR, but it never works for me.😒 ‘Tis the sad reality.

Oh and then there’s…….Garrett.πŸ˜’ Seeing how this is a Beauty and the Beast Retelling, Garrett just reminded me of Gaston.😀

OMG and looking at the GIF, I can even see the resemblance between the two!πŸ˜‚ They both look the same AND act the same. Garrett kept trying to get Rosie to agree to be his date even when she said ‘no’ and believed himself to be the most beautiful person ever xD. Just like Gaston.🀒

Hehe and I was trying to come up with some ship names for Vance & Rosie. Like Rance? Or Vosie? xD they’re so bad.😬🀣 I don’t even know why I tried after my first attempt at coming up with ship names in The Upside of Falling . Never let me come up with new ship names xD.

Aghhhh and how did Ashely Poston manage to make me fall in love with her side characters so much???πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜ Annie & Quinn were such awesome best friends for Rosie. I loved how their friendship was never compromised throughout the story and it stayed true the whole way.πŸ₯° Nothing got between the trio.πŸ’ž

AND NEVER FORGET SPACE DADπŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Space Dad was such an amazing figure in this book. Rosie’s Dad was also dealing with the grief of losing his wife but he always acted cheerful and even though he made mistakes in front of a lot people (like burning down the kitchenπŸ˜‚) he still was amazing.😍

This can be read as a standalone, but there are a lot of references from the previous books which makes me wish I read the 2nd book before this.πŸ˜… BUT I did manage to read some reviews of the The Princess and the Fangirl and get some of the references in this book xD.

Now my only complaint of Bookish and the Beast is that IT WAS TOO SHORT.😭😭😭 I really wish there was more to read. I WANT MORE ROSANCE okay, okay, that was bad.πŸ™ˆ. BUT STILL. MORE ROSIE x VANCE.πŸ₯Ί 288 PAGES WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME😭

Ahhh well there’s always re-reads.

Still. I’m just gonna be over here hoping that the author will decide to make more contemporaries in this series.🀞
