Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Mass | Review

She is the greatest assassin her world has ever known. But does she have the heart of a killer?

After a year of hard labor in the Salt Mines of Endovier, eighteen-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien has won the king’s contest to become the new royal assassin. But Calaena is far from loyal to the crown. Keeping up the charade – while pretending to do the king’s bidding – will test her skills in an entirely new way. And it certainly isn’t the only point of confusion for the young girl. Because though she’s made her choice between Dorian and Chaol, the ways of the heart are never simple…

Rating: 4 out of 5.

okay, so I actually don’t hate Chaol??? Like before this reread I totally did, but now I don’t. shook

out of curiosity, does anyone actually like him?

ahaha I do get the feeling that I’m going to remember why I hated him once I reread QoS but maybe I won’t…? Until then.

“The best lies were always mixed with truth.”

After winning the title of the King’s Champion through a deadly tournament, Celaena Sardothien is now doing the king’s dirty work tasks, while being silently judged by the others a.k.a. Dorian, Chaol and Nehemia. Little do they know she’s not actually…going through with these ‘tasks’.

For the king to discover would mean death — death for her and for Chaol.

Chaol, whom she harbors ~feelings~ for.

The question is, will she be able to keep up this charade?

═══.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.═══

“Why are you crying?”
“Because,” she whispered, her voice shaking, “you remind me of what the world ought to be. What the world can be.”

I definitely loved Celaena way more in this book than the first — but it was mostly after part 2 that I did…for reasons you’ll know if you read the book. She was a lot more savage there where in the first part she was more like a lovesick fool. (not that that’s bad of course)

After the halfway mark, I was cackling like a maniac when I saw how bloodthirsty she was. Totally cheering her on, especially when she tortured said people that deserved it. what does that say about me? hmmm

This scene was one of my favourites ohmygod im wheezing-

“Then Celaena and the King of Adarlan smiled at each other, and it was the most terrifying thing Dorian had ever seen.”

But with all of that, she was also in p a i n. And Celaena in pain = me in pain.

And this is just the beginning — I don’t remember much of this series, but I remember enough of HoF to know that I’m gonna have to be preparing myself for the feels.

Ready for the sobbing.😃🔫

═══.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.═══

“And he deserved someone who would look at him like that, even if the love wouldn’t be the same, even if the girl wouldn’t be her.

So Dorian closed his eyes, and took another long breath. And when he opened his eyes, he let her go.”

I’m trying to figure out why I didn’t like Dorian before, but I honestly don’t remember.

Dorian is such a cinnamon roll.

Like I was meh on him before but no omg I love him and I now see why everyone loves him. Even though this is a reread, I never realized how amazing he is. How could I not have loved him??? smh

He’s so sweet and the way him and Celaena were so cold and distant from each other in the beginning — sobs heartbreaking. I will never forget how SJM destroyed that ship in the first book.

And even after the way Celaena treated him in the first half, he was there for her in the 2nd half and that is just ughhhh he’s so sweet. I want more Dorian 😦

═══.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.═══

“There had never been any line between them, only his own stupid fear and pride.

Because from the moment he’d pulled her out of that mine in Endovier and she had set those eyes upon him, still fierce despite a year in hell, he’d been walking toward this, walking to her.

And now finally, Chaol. 🛑There will be SPOILERS from this book🛑

My feelings for Chaol are bit complicated right now. It doesn’t help that I literally remember almost nothing from this series, only bits and pieces. I hated Chaol before rereading — I didn’t remember why, but I remembered that I just did.

So for like the first half of this book that hatred did not change. I was so not cheering for the romance between Celaena and Chaol like no, no, no. Just no.

And then he gets kidnapped, Celaena saves him and there she finds out that he kept the secret that the king was going to be talking with Nehemia. Nehemia dies, Celaena blames Chaol, I blame Chaol.

But I forgot that Chaol wasn’t actually at fault. I didn’t remember that the king didn’t kill Nehemia. IT WAS ARCHER. shook why did I not remember that???

Anyways, so really the only bad thing Chaol did in the end was keep away from telling Celaena that the kill was going to talk to Nehemia, and probably kill her anyways if that happened.

BUT I mean, you can’t really fault him that he kept a secret that the king told him not to tell anyone else. He has been sworn to the king for basically all his life?

Still, that doesn’t excuse that he kept that from the person he supposedly claimed to love. ehhh idk but it’s not surprising considering Chaol’s personality. So yeah, I don’t hate him, but I don’t love him either. (I’m gonna probably want to kill him in QoS)

Although I was laughing so hard to his reaction finding out that Celaena was Aelin AHAHAHA sucker.

damn wow, so I ended up writing so much about Chaol

I’m so so excited to reread Heir of Fire ahhh ROWANN HERE I COME. ALTHOUGH I DIDN’T LIKE YOU MUCH. I wonder how I’ll find him this time around.

Kingdom of the Wicked (Kingdom of the Wicked, #1) by Kerri Maniscalco | Review

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“One day you’ll call me Death.

For now, Wrath will do.”

I want a hot demon prince Wrath for myself, please and thank you.😏🖤

Nonna gave many warnings to guard thy heart from the Wicked, but the endeavor was futile…….

It was stolen anyways.🥺 altho is it really any surprise that happened?

I LOVED Kerri’s SJTR series , so the second I finished it and heard that she was making another series set in a world of demons, witches, and with an enemies-to-lovers trope—oh I just knew that I’d fall in love.🥰

Emilia di Carlo leads a perfectly normal life at least, as normal as you could get being a witch and all with her twin, Vittoria , her parents, and Nonna, helping around and about at the family restaurant, Sea & Vines (omg the descriptions of the food was just mouth-watering).

Sure, they all have to hide the fact that they’re witches lest they be burned to the stake by others (ha doesn’t sound bad at all), but other than that, everything’s as good as it can be.

Until, one night —Emilia stumbles upon a horrifying scene.
Her sister.
Heart torn out and all. shudder

Yeah……that obviously didn’t go well with Emilia.😢
Heartbroken and hell-bent on revenge, she begins her journey in solving the mystery behind Vittoria’s death, and will go to any length to avenge her. Even use dark magic and accidently summon one of the demon princes of Hell—Wrath😈.

Starting to feel like I’m mentioning him too much haha

“There are victors and victims. Decide who you want to be. Or the choice will be made for you, witch. And I doubt you’ll like it.”

I threw my head back and groaned. “It’s a game of scopa, not a battle between life and death. Are you always this dramatic?”

Ahhh this is just one of many hilarious conversations between Emilia and Wrath.🤣 Their constant bickering was one of my favourite parts xD honestly, just seeing Wrath made me happy.

Emilia was once the quiet and “I-avoid-trouble” kind of girl, but once the death of her twin occurs, she goes through some major character development and is forced to take risks she would’ve never done before. I do love how most people could probably relate to that not the death causing character development part. I myself am always afraid to take a step out of my comfort zone, for fear I’ll fail/do terrible.

With Emilia, she would constantly take new risks, and even when she did fail, at least she’d eventually get back up again and continue to grow. It’s a nice motivator for those who fear trying new things at least for me haha. That’s what I loved most about Emilia.🥰

And then there’s Wrath. It was love at first sight meeting Wrath.🥺😍 You can always count me in when it comes to tall, dark, and handsome demon princes—especially the suspicious ones😆. So many secrets…….but you still can’t help but love Wrath at least I couldn’t. (ahhhh and the candle scene was just so sweet <3)

xD I’ve said this many times, but I really should never be a detective in charge of a murder scene. I’d get fired on the first day.😂 I just can never guess right when it comes to who the culprit is I’m not even close. I saw that some others who read KotW say that it was pretty predictable, but I was honestly just shocked and didn’t even think of suspecting a certain someone.

Ahhhh yes, I’m a very bad mystery solver.😎
Note-to-self: Don’t trust my judgement on characters when it comes plots with mysteries involved.

asdfghjkl it felt like centuries waiting for Kingdom of the Wicked to come out and now I have wait another few centuries for the next book.😭😭😭

My only complaint with this book would be that it felt waaaay too short. Maybe a little too fast-paced? But it’s not really a big deal, it’s more of “I wish it lasted longer” feeling. I want more Emilia and Wrath mostly just Wrath hehe😍😍😍

And after that ending omggggg I can already tell the 2nd book is going to be even better!!! Especially with where it’s going to be taking place.😏

Aghhhh now to wait. My least favourite word. still haven’t given up on getting my demon prince btw

Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove, #2) by Shelby Mahurin | Review

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Evil always seeks a foothold. We must not give it one.”

I trusted you—but you went ahead and broke my heart anyways.😭 You did EXACTLY what I BEGGED you not to do. (view spoiler)[I SWEAR AND I CALLED IT. I JUST KNEW SHELBY WAS GONNA GO AHEAD AND KILL SWEET ANSEL🥺😫 (hide spoiler)]
I can’t stop crying. This is one of the worst cliffhangers ever.😭😭😭 Fall 2021 is just too far.😓

Blood & Honey literally picks up right after the events in Serpent & Dove and I am so happy I did a reread of S&D or I definitely would’ve been so lost.

Against all odds, Lou & Reid have fallen in love and now have to deal with the aftermath of incurring both Morgane Le Blanc and Auguste Lyon’s wrath. They’re all on the run—Lou, Reid, Beau, Coco, Ansel, and Madame Labelle—and let’s just say from page 1……things are tense .😓

No more is the light and funny atmosphere that was previously in the first book. Everyone is one edge, fearful of an attack from the Chasseurs or worse……..Lou’s mother, Morgane. The only solution they can think of is gaining more allies to fight back against Le Dames Blanches, but that’s not as easy as it sounds. And thus, the adventure begins.

“You see magic as a weapon, Reid, but you’re wrong. It simply . . . is. If you wish to use it for harm, it harms, and if you wish to use it to save . . .
It saves.”

Reid was probably most affected from what happened in S&D. He finds out that he’s a witch—the creatures he’d spent almost all his life hunting down and killing, believing them to be abominations to this world—AND he’d murdered the Archibishop—the man he’d looked up to as a father and the only person who actually cared for him growing up…… That’s gotta be traumatic.😥

Although Reid was hurting everywhere, he still acted like an idiot sometimes and it was pretty annoying BUT I understood where it was coming from. And after that ending…….oh nooo I’m scared.😬

“What you are now is not what you’ve always been, nor is it what you always will be. You are a snake. Shed your skin if it no longer serves you. Transform into something different. Something better.”

Haha this might be weird, but I honestly just loved Lou’s decent into darkness . It’s nice to see some change when the MC is struggling to find the good within themselves and slowly loses it. Okay, okay, that sounded so evil of me xD but I just found it so cool.😈🙈

I mean, after almost getting killed by her own mother twice, she’s bound to be a teensy bit on edge and a little crazed.😵 Anyone would. This darkness within is calling out to her, changing her, and you know what happens when someone uses too much power…….it’ll turn them into a completely different person. Well, such things start to happen here.😰

Also, Lou’s white hair……omg the way she got it was pretty hilarious actually and I shouldn’t be surprised that’s how her hair changed colors.🤣 I did feel bad for her though. It’s the same color as that twisted monster. 😤 Lou still looks as beautiful as ever!🥰

Gorgeous art by @morgana0anagrom!!!😍

“Only a fool would cross my aunt.”

Learning more about Coco and her past was just perfect👌 In the previous book, we didn’t really know much about her except that she was Lou’s best friend and part of the Le Dames Rouge. Here, we learn all kinds of things. Some jaw-dropping and some……sad.😞 She’s definitely not the flirty and carefree girl I thought she was in book 1. And after what happened in the cliffhanger…….oh boy I can only imagine what’s gonna happen next.😫

“It’s a real pity,” Beau finally muttered, shaking his head and looking at each of us in turn. His eyes shone with disappointment. “I know you’re all too preoccupied with your pining to notice, but I just caught my reflection in that last puddle—and damn, I look good.”

Omg I just love Beau.😂 He remains to be one of my favourite characters in this world. While everyone else is on edge, Beau is the only one still cracking up jokes and trying to lift the mood that they’re all bringing down. Of course, he can be such a bully to my sweet Ansel which is totally unacceptable. Still, he wasn’t in any of the huge dramas that happened between the others xD.

Oooo but learning about his sisters— twin sisters —was so adorable. Victoire & Violette……I hope to see more of them💕. BUT NOT Auguste Lyon. I’ve had enough of that guy. What a jerk of a father.😠 Don’t worry Beau, I love you.😘

“I’m sick and tired of everyone needing to protect me. I’d like to protect myself for a change, or even—”
“I just want to contribute to the group. I don’t want to be the bumbling idiot anymore. Is that so much to ask? I just . . . I don’t want to be a liability.”

Oh Ansel🥺😭 You’re not a bumbling idiot. I love Beau, but sometimes he just needs to shut the hell up . Ansel made me hurt the most. He felt so worthless the whole book and my heart was just breaking for him. Everyone else was worrying and dealing with their own problems, but they were forgetting that Ansel was the youngest of them all and was struggling with his own self-worth and contribution the the team. He felt so alone, I just can’t😭💔

I loved that he got some more screen-time and we learned more about his past. Lou was just amazing for knowing when Ansel was feeling troubled and needed someone to talk to. She made sure to be there for him most of the time and protect him. Ansel is another favourite of mine.🥺🥰

Now of course, with a new book comes new characters. Some of these guys I just loved and automatically became a favourite and some………not so much.😬 I’m looking at you, Nicholina

“Love. The most elusive of mistresses. In all my years, I must confess to finding her only twice. The first was a headstrong young shepherd much like your Reid, and the second . . . well, that wound is not quite healed. It would be foolish to reopen it.”

I immediately loved Claud Deveraux the moment I saw him. He’s just so cool!😍 And such a wise, wise man. His charm is irresistible and I had a feeling that he’d be a HUGE help to the others. Like I seriously can’t think of anything to hate about him xD.

Oh yeah and he’s also the leader of the Troupe de Fortune with it’s members Zenna, Seraphina, and the twins—Thierry & Toulouse. Deveraux loves to collect all sorts of people. As Zenna said, “He adds only the best and brightest talent to his troupes. The rare and unusual. The exceptional.”

And by Reid’s words, he considers Claud to be mad.😂 He probably thinks that especially because he was forced into leather pants by the one and only Deveraux. Reid in leather pants……imagine that.👀🤭

“Call him, call him, let the trees maul him, boil and butter and split and saw him—”
“The trees in this forest have eyes, little mouse. She spies, she spies, she spies, little mouse—”

I need only one word to describe Nicholina and that is………CREEEEPYYY. shudder The way she talks is soooo disturbing. All I think of her as is a maniac who is apparently the personal assistant of La Voisin (leader of La Dame Rouges). I didn’t understand how or why until the end and just…… Too many thoughts are going on in my head right now.😵 I really, really don’t like Nicholina.😒

There were of course, some other new characters like Blaise, Gabrielle, etc, etc but well ehhhhh this review is already long enough so I’ll stop there.😅

One more thing that must happen in S&D3…….

That ending seriously destroyed me.🥺😭💔 I’ve never been so thankful to have entered the preorder campaign for B&H as I am now. It’ll include a sneak peak to S&D3 and that is SO what I need right now.

There, I’m done.
I feel dead on the inside.

“The world didn’t end in a scream.

It ended in a gasp. A single, startled exhalation. And then—

Nothing but silence.”

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1) by Shelby Mahurin | Review

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲🐢

“Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from you.

Where you go, I will go.

Where you stay, I will stay.”

Ahhh I am so not ready for B&H.🔥

I saw many warnings around GR saying that one should reread Serpent & Dove before going on to Blood & Honey.

And it’s good I did that because turns out I forgot……a lot.😅

The story revolves around a witch & witch-hunterLousie Le Blanc & Reid Diggory, who unexpectedly get into an accident forcing them into a marriage neither of them wants. Ahaha and the situation was just hilarious🤣.

‘He scowled. “I expected little else. We shall, however, endeavor to find you more presentable garments. I won’t dishonor Reid by having his bride appear a heathen, even if she is one.”

“How dare you?” I clutched the front of my ruined dress in mock affront. “I am a God-fearing Christian woman now—”

My husband hauled me away before I could utter another word.

I swore I heard one of his teeth crack.’

Reid’s frustration with Lou was amazing.😂 Their bantering was hilarious and Reid’s reaction to the things Lou would say was just too good.👌😆

‘My eyes lit up. “Yes! I set a warehouse on fire once. One match, and the whole thing went up like a smokestack.”

He stared at me in horror. “You set a building on fire?”’

Of course, let’s not forget Big Titty Liddy🤣. I can’t wait to see the rest of the song in Blood & Honey!!!

“‘Big Titty Liddy was not very pretty, but her bosom was big as a barn,’” I sang. “‘Her creamery knockers drove men off their rockers, but she was blind to their charms—’”

“Stop!” His face burned so vivid a scarlet it rivaled my husband’s. “What are you doing? That—that’s indecent!”

“Of course it is. It’s a pub song!”

“You’ve been in a pub?” he asked, flabbergasted. “But you’re a woman.”

Poor Ansel had to deal with Lou’s many antics in the beginning. It was too funny, though. He was like a mini Reid at first.🤣

“I assume it involves kicking puppies or stealing the souls of children.”

Ansel looked around anxiously. “You can’t say things like that. It’s inappropriate. You’re a Chasseur’s wife now.”

“Oh, please.” I gave an exaggerated eye roll. “I thought I’d already made it clear I don’t give a rat’s ass about being appropriate. Shall I remind you? There are two more verses to ‘Big Titty Liddy.’”

He paled. “Please don’t.”

Ansel is such a sweet cinnamon roll🥺🥰. No harm must come to him in B&H or else—

Then there’s Coco and Beau. Beau didn’t really appear much until the end and I’m so looking forward to seeing more of him in the next book.😍 Coco’s such an awesome best friend and I’m curious to learn more about La Voisin and the Dames Rouge. Good thing I won’t have to wait long now.😏

I love a good enemies-to-lovers and this was just ✨perfection✨.

So much character development—especially in Reid. He went from someone who didn’t swear (like me🤯) and being a strict rule follower & believer to a man who now looked at the world differently (from his original black & white view) and became more aware of others and their motives. He’s all grown up😢💕.

~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS HERE~~~~~~~~~
And of course, the ending!!!! Reid actually sweared hahahaha🤣
I stared at her for a long second. Convinced I hadn’t heard her. Convinced she might start laughing, or a feu follet would flare and transport me back to reality. But—no. This was my new reality. Anger erupted inside me, burning away the last of my scruples. “Why the fuck is everyone in this kingdom trying to murder my wife?”
A bubble of laughter escaped Madame Labelle’s lips, but I didn’t think it was funny at all. “What are we going to do? Where are we going to go?”
“Reid,” she said slowly, incredulously, “did you just curse?”
My reaction exactly.😵🤣😆
~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS END~~~~~~~~~

If possible, Serpent & Dove was even better than the first time I read it.🥰

Please, Blood & Honey……..don’t let me down.🥺
